PhD Opportunities in Physical Therapy/Human Movement Science
Location: Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA.
The School of Physical Therapy in the College of Health Sciences at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia is actively seeking highly motivated graduate students interested in pursuing doctoral study in Physical Therapy and/or Human Movement Science. Specific areas of on-going work include; the dynamics of walking and postural control, assessment of falls risk in different populations at risk, the role of virtual reality in rehabilitation of stroke patients, the effects of muscle fatigue on motor function, and the neurological basis of physiological tremor in different populations.
We currently have opportunities for funding (RA and TA) for qualified individuals to start in Fall of 2010.
THE PROGRAM
The School of Physical Therapy at Old Dominion University will be offering comprehensive advanced training in the Movement Science are leading to Ph.D degrees in Physical Therapy. Students will have the opportunity to take advanced level courses in biomechanics, motor control, and research methodologies. Students can also take classes outside of the School of Physical Therapy in areas such as Biomedical Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, and Human Movement Science.
FACILITIES
The School of Physical Therapy's facilities include a new 3800 square feet state of the art facility for the study of human movement (http://hs.odu.edu/physther/academics/about.shtml). The Research Facility is exceptionally well equipped with a 10 camera Vicon MX motion analysis system, AMTI and Bertec force plates, multi-channel EMG and tremor recording systems.
BACKGROUND
Minimum qualifications include: a Master or DPT degree in a related field and a GPA of 3.0 or above. A strong background in Physical Therapy, Motor Control, Kinesiology, Biomechanics, and/or Human Physiology is highly desirable, as is clinical rehabilitation training and experience. It is expected that the preferred candidate(s) would also effective communication and strong computational skills (physics, computer programming, etc.). Applicants are required to be fluent in English and have undertaken the GRE. More information about the Physical Therapy program can be found at:
