PhD Opportunity in Bioengineering
Location: Durham University, UK
The School of Engineering and Computing Sciences
at Durham University has a vacancy for an
Industrial CASE studentship sponsored jointly by EPSRC and Biomet Ltd.
This is a 3 year PhD project starting in 2010.
Details of Industrial CASE studentships can be found on the EPSRC web site:
http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/CollabTraining/IndustrialCASE/FAQs.htm
Deadline for applications: 30th May 2010
PROJECT DETAILS:
EPSRC CASE Studentship with Biomet Ltd
Partial Revision of Metal Hip Resurfacing Joint
Using Alternative Bearing Surfaces
The aim of the research is to investigate the key
alternative bearing surfaces for total hip
arthroplasty. As a large number of patients are
receiving replacements at a younger age and also
living longer, it is important to develop
conservative options to allow for revision (i.e.
a second operation). An important question that
needs answering is whether a failed femoral
component in a hip with a modern-generation
metal-on-metal resurfacing arthroplasty can be
successfully converted to total hip arthroplasty
using non-metallic femoral head components.
The student will benefit from interactions
between University and Industry and have access
to both Durham University and Biomet’s
state-of-the-art laboratories. The student will
be based at Durham University but with a few
months of industrial placements at Biomet Ltd,
the world leader in the orthopaedics market. The
student will have both Academic and Industrial Supervisors.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates should have a 1st or 2.1 degree in
Engineering or a related discipline.
STUDENTSHIP DETAILS:
This studentship is available to UK and other EU
nationals (due to funding criteria) and covers
university fees and stipend subject to
eligibility. For details see:
http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/StudentEligibility.htm
The stipend, with company top up, will be
£15,000 pa. Maintenance grants are generally tax
free, but this will depend upon personal circumstances.
Full details of how to apply can be found at
