Digital Industrial Ergonomics and Shoulder Evaluation Laboratory (DIESEL), University of Waterloo, Department of Kinesiology

The lab is currently seeking to appoint a full-time post-doctoral research fellow starting immediately. The appointment will be for up to a maximum of 36 months. The fellow will be supervised by Dr. Clark Dickerson for the duration of the appointment: ( The area of specialization will be shoulder biomechanics, broadly defined.

    Research Overview:
A high proportion of costly workplace injuries are musculoskeletal in origin. Unfortunately, limited evidence-based methods exist for preventing and treating these injuries, especially for the shoulder. The ultimate goal of this research is the reduction of shoulder injuries in society. However, a lack of options for evaluating shoulder exposures and their physical consequences often results in ineffective design, surgical, ergonomic, and clinical techniques. Developing better tools requires resolving important unanswered questions of shoulder function and injury pathways. Mathematical modeling is an emergent means to address these questions. Our state-of-the-art laboratory is positioned to do innovative research towards improving means of injury prevention. The research focuses on first quantifying fatigue-induced kinematic changes in the shoulder components, and secondly on systematically integrating these changes into an advanced computerized model to enable better understanding of mechanisms of subacromial impingement and concomitant disorders. Several experiments are planned to accomplish these goals, including applied studies that consider the geometries of current work environments. More details can be provided to potential applicants.

Applicants must have an earned doctoral degree in kinesiology, engineering (preferably mechanical, biomedical, or electrical), or a closely related discipline. Experience with in vivo data collection and computer programming (i.e. Matlab, C++, etc) is preferred but not a prerequisite. Salary is competitive.

    Application Procedure:
Applicants should send a brief statement of research interests and experience, a current CV, and contact information for 3 academic references to:
