Applications are invited for the post of Research Assistant to contribute to a study of the so-called general movements (GM) in early infancy. The study is funded by the EPSRC as part of the Sussex CCNR Cross-Disciplinary Feasibility Account (EP/H024638/1). It is a collaborative study, involving the University of Sussex (where the study lead, Dr Luc Berthouze, is based) and the UCL Institute of Child Health, where the investigator is Dr Margaret Mayston.
The post is available immediately. Duration will depend on percentage FTE and qualifications, but will be equivalent to 6-9 months as a 50% post. Starting date and structure of the contract is negotiable.
The goal of the study is to use the tools of dynamical systems analysis to characterise the movements of healthy babies aged 6 weeks to 4 months, and provide the basis for an early diagnosis of infants with, or at risk of, motor disorders of neurological origins (e.g., Cerebral Palsy). You will assist with data collection, processing, and analysis. This will include contributing to the development and implementation of novel methods of analysis of movement and EMG data.
You should have strong mathematical skills, including interest and/or experience in the use of methods from dynamical systems analysis, excellent programming skills (Matlab or Python) and, quite importantly, a sense of minutiae along with excellent organisational skills. Preference will be given to applicants with a good post-graduate degree in quantitative disciplines (mathematics, physics, computer science), however, excellent final year students (especially those with an interest in pursuing graduate studies) will also be considered. Salary will be commensurate with skills and abilities.
