Zimmer, Inc. a global leader in the development, manufacturing and marketing of orthopaedic devices currently has an immediate, full time opening for a Senior Research Engineer II, Computational Biomechanics.
Principal Job Functions:
This engineer will specialize in the use of computer simulation including finite element analysis (FEA) and multi-body dynamics/musculoskeletal modeling to solve challenging R&D problems. The individual assumes responsibility for all phases of an analysis project, from initial requestor contact to final report. This person reports to a Principal Engineer in the Computational Biomechanics group, and is expected to handle responsibilities with little or no supervision. This person will also serve as a primary liaison on product development teams, coordinating research tasks including experimental testing, materials analysis, and computational modeling in support of development. Additional responsibilities include the following:
1. Motivate and oversee research activities, including computational and experimental testing and materials evaluation, in support of new product development.
2. Develop and implement biomechanical loading rationales to ensure safety and performance of products.
3. Perform all phases of computational simulation of product performance, from formulating a protocol through documenting results, in order to address project needs.
4. Actively increase awareness of computational biomechanics in segments across the company, including R&D, manufacturing, brand marketing, and education.
5. Assist in the maintenance and upgrading or addition of computer hardware and simulation software.
6. Maintain communication with vendors, suppliers, test laboratory engineers, outside consultants and outside researchers on matters pertaining to job duties and other business related issues.
7. Monitor technical and medical literature for advances relevant to job function.
8. Maintain a level of expertise consistent with current best practices through continuing education.
Qualifications:
* Minimum qualifications include an M.S. degree in Engineering from an accredited curriculum in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related discipline; a Ph.D. is preferred. Knowledge of orthopaedic implants and orthopaedic biomechanics is preferred.
* Solid grounding in the principles of solid and rigid body biomechanics and the application of simulation techniques such as FEA is required. Knowledge of fatigue, fracture mechanics, and material science (particularly mechanical behavior of engineering materials and biomaterials) is preferred.
* Candidate should be able to manage multidisciplinary projects; candidate should have superior communication skills and be comfortable making technical presentations to internal and external audiences.
* Experience with commercial FE software (Abaqus or ANSYS) is required. Experience with other tools relevant to preparing and solving problems in computational biomechanics (e.g. Unigraphics, MIMICS, Amira, Anybody) is desired.
* Demonstrated expertise in advanced modeling techniques such as wear, software coupling and customization, injection molding, structural optimization, and patient specific modeling is an asset.
