    EPSRC Industrial CASE Award PhD Studentship (Full Time; 3 years)
    COLLABORATION BETWEEN IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON AND UK Sport

    Is there a role for orthotics in optimising the performance of rowers?

    We invite applications for this unique new research collaboration between the Departments of Surgery and Bioengineering at Imperial College London and UK Sport that builds on a long standing collaboration between Imperial College and British International Rowing. Applicants should have a least a first class or upper second class degree in a subject related to bioengineering, human performance or rehabilitation sciences to undertake a PhD research programme in the area of elite biomechanical performance, with specific focus on the foot and orthotics. The project will involve interactions with Olympic level coaches and athletes and as a CASE award will include working with the sport directly.

    This PhD research will include:

    Determining the impact of foot and ankle position on leg and back biomechanics and rowing kinematics

    Determining the impact of foot and ankle biomechanics on rowing performance through detailed 3-D optical motion analysis and subsequent data mining and statistical modelling

    Investigating the differences in orthotic requirement between the standard clinical orthotic prescription and that required for the rowing activity

    Using the knowledge gained above to determine the role of/ need for orthotics during rowing and other key training sessions eg weight training, cross training etc

    Making recommendations with respect to optimising the mechanics of the foot and ankle with respect to rowing performance and injury prevention during ergometer and on-water rowing that can be applied on a person specific basis using an algorithm of key input variables that can be obtained in a "practical" rowing environment

    Because of the breadth of skills required, some of which the applicant will have to develop, the applicant should be highly personally motivated, with the ability to study independently. In addition, the applicant should be an exceptional communicator able to work together with a larger team. This larger team includes the Imperial College academic team, the new collaborative team at UK Sport as well as the British International Rowing coaching and medical team.

    A stipend and fees for 3 years will be awarded. Students must satisfy the eligibility criteria, including UK or EU residence for three or more years
