PhD Studentship - Predicting Limb Soundness Through Biomechanical Assessment of Gait in Pigs
Newcastle University, U.K.
Closing Date: 25th June 2010
Details:
Supervisors: Dr Jonathan Guy, Professor Sandra Edwards, Dr Sian Lawson
Sponsor: British Pig Executive (BPEX)
Duration of the award: 3 years
The aim of this studentship is to evaluate the predictive power of an assessment of an animals' gait early in life to identify predisposition to subsequent locomotor problems, by developing appropriate motion analysis techniques.
In the case of the pig, which is prone to lameness both as a juvenile being reared for meat and as an adult for breeding, this methodology could lead to substantial improvements in animal welfare. For the UK pig industry, this project could deliver a powerful tool for breeding companies to select replacement animals to promote longevity and thus contribute to sustainable methods of pig production.
The student will be part of a network of scientists and postgraduate students that address scientific problems relevant to the pig industry. He/she will also work closely with the BPEX Knowledge Transfer team to gain an understanding of the context in which his/her project takes place, and disseminate relevant results to the pig industry.
Value of the Award and Eligibility
The studentship will cover UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £13,000. UK, EU and international students may apply but international students will need to source additional funds to cover the difference between UK/EU tuition fees and international tuition fees.
Person Specification
You should have, or expect to achieve a minimum of an upper-second-class Honours degree in either engineering (bioengineering, mechanical or medical engineering with an awareness of animal biology) or animal biology (animal or veterinary science, biology, zoology or another relevant subject). You should have, or be willing to develop, quantitative skills, be enthusiastic and motivated by scientific problems that lead to applied solutions for the pig industry.
Closing date for applications: 25 June 2010
