Faculty Position at the University of Southern California
The Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level. The faculty member is expected to establish a world-class, active, and independent program of extramurally funded research in an area closely related to biokinesiology, which is the integrative study of the causal links between biological mechanisms and purposeful movement. The focus of biokinesiology is on understanding how the human body adapts to growth and experience as well as to injury, disease, and aging. In addition to research, the faculty member will teach in the biokinesiology and/or clinical physical therapy programs, and will be expected to contribute to faculty and University governance.
Our search is broad as we seek to attract a leader in general areas of exercise science, muscle physiology, neuroscience, biomechanics, motor development, and physical therapy clinical science including health outcomes. A major objective of the Division is to develop a strong association between basic and clinical research, and also to build collaborative and interdisciplinary research programs in an area of rehabilitation-related science to complement research strengths and ambitious goals of the Division and University at large. Indeed, the University strongly encourages interdisciplinary research arrangements. An earned doctoral degree is required and, for new investigators, a promising publication record and some post-doctoral research experience are essential. Evidence of teaching aptitude and ability to attract funding are also desirable. It is not necessary for candidates to be physical therapists nor is it necessary that candidates currently reside within the United States.
The Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at USC is ranked #1 in the country due to its well-established 65-year history of teaching excellence and research innovation and impact. The Division, which is administratively housed within the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, is located on USC’s Health Sciences Campus, and enjoys collaborative relationships with the other disciplines of the academic health center including medicine, occupational science and occupational therapy, pharmacy, biometry, and preventive medicine. The USC University Hospital, the LA County + USC Medical Center, and the USC Norris Cancer Hospital are also part of the campus community. Our faculty have strong collaborative relationships with academic programs located on USC’s University Park Campus including the Viterbi School of Engineering, the School of Gerontology, and various Departments in the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. The Division has more than 300 students engaged in graduate study in either the PhD and MS programs in Biokinesiology, Doctor of Physical Therapy program, or clinical residencies in orthopedic, neurologic, and sports physical therapy. Our Division leads and is affiliated with multiple large externally funded research centers of local, national and international scope.
The Division’s faculty is comprised of basic scientists, applied researchers, and master clinicians working in close partnership with community practitioners. The faculty clinical practices operate in acute care and outpatient settings at the University Hospital, as well as in a network of private practices. Teaching facilities are modern and include spacious teaching laboratories, and two state-of-the art lecture halls. Faculty research facilities include motion analysis, exercise science, neuroscience, motor behavior, muscle physiology, molecular and cellular biology laboratories and the new Bice Clinical Research Center.
