The project
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling disease, affecting the joints of 40% or
more of the population over 60. Fully degenerated joints can be replaced
with a prosthesis: well over 1,000,000 joint replacements are performed
annually in the EU. To optimize the function and longevity of joint
prostheses, a pre-operative planning system is being developed that is able
to generate virtual 3D anatomical models from patient’s 2D X ray images.
This technology will enhance the image data available from standard X-rays
of e.g. a hip joint by generating virtual anatomical models of the complete
musculoskeletal system (bones, ligaments, tendon and muscles) of the upper
or lower limb, currently only possible through a combination of CT and MRI
images. These virtual anatomical models of the bones and the relevant soft
tissue structures will provide the necessary geometric data to generate
biomechanical models for surgical planning tools.

The position
As a postdoc you will focus your research on application of statistical 3D
shape and intensity models of bone and soft tissues to rapidly construct
three dimensional anatomical models from two dimensional X-ray images. Also,
novel techniques will be investigated for analysis of Diffusion Tensor MR
imaging of skeletal muscles in the shoulder.

The department
You will work at the Biomechanics and Imaging Group (BIG), Department of
Orthopaedics, in tight collaboration with the Division of Image Processing
(LKEB). BIG consists of two staff members and ten PhD students. There is
close collaboration with the orthopaedic surgeons in the department. The
LKEB consists of approximately 40 researchers who focus their research on
biomedical image analysis.

Your profile
We are looking for creative and enthusiastic scientists with a PhD degree in
Biomedical Sciences, Informatics, Engineering or Physics. You have
experience with medical image processing applied to orthopaedic research,
and preferably with Statistical Shape Modelling and / or diffusion tensor MR
imaging. Experience with object-oriented programming in C++ is preferred.
Furthermore you are familiar with working in multi-disciplinary research
teams. You also have a strong publication track record and good
communication skills.

We offer
You will be employed on the basis of a 36-hour week. Appointment is for two
years. Your salary will depend on your qualifications and experience, with a
maximum of € 3,860 gross per month based on a full time position (scale 10
of the Collective Labour Agreement for University Hospitals).

The terms of employment offered by the LUMC are highly favourable. For
example, you will receive an 8% holiday remuneration, a year-end bonus, a
pension arrangement with the National Civil Pension Fund, and, if
