Post Doctoral Research Fellow in Health Engineering
Three year fixed term contract
Salary - £36,020 - £39,046 p.a. inc.
The Department of Life Sciences undertakes first-class research work across a range of disciplines including health engineering and biomechanics. The Department has established an active research community, and excelled in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008). More than 90% of our submitted work was recognised internationally and nationally.
Biomechanics and health engineering are fast growing areas of research at Roehampton. The interdisciplinary research team, which comprises engineers, clinicians and sport scientists, has been carrying out exciting work related to back pain, ageing and osteoporosis, and the mechanisms of falling. The team is particularly interested in developing new technologies to study physical activity and musculoskeletal problems, and in employing engineering theories to analyse the musculoskeletal system. We have well-equipped laboratories, including a complete motion analyis system with force plates and video cameras, inertial and electromagnetic motions sensors, electromyography and computing tools such as MatLab.
The post-doc research fellow will undertake research which aims to examine the feasibility of using mobile technologies and motion sensors to analyse daily activities, trips and falls in the elderly population. The person will also look at the use of similar technologies in studying the relationship between spine posture and musculoskeletal functions.
The successful candidate should be an engineer with a PhD and a background in health engineering/bioengineering as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications. Candidates who come from traditional engineering disciplines eg mechanical/electronic engineering, mechatronics are also welcome, although a desire to be working in the biomedical field will be essential. A critical appointment criterion is that the candidate must be able to engage in income generation and knowledge transfer activities in order to sustain the research work. Expertise in robotics, artificial intelligence, neural networks or statistical modelling would be highly desirable. The candidate must be meticulous in planning, executing and organising experiments, and be capable of taking initiative, and working independently in a collaborative setting
