  • PhD project on biomechanics of cycling accidents in UniversityCollege Dublin, Ireland

Applications are invited for this PhD vacancy:

Analysis and reconstruction of cycling accidents involving head injury

This project will undertake an in-depth study of head injury accidents
involving cyclists, who are among the most vulnerable cohort of road
users. Computer reconstructions of real world accident data will
quantify the severity of head impact (both linear and angular)
sustained during accidents and will relate this to actual injury
outcomes. These analyses will quantify the benefits of helmet use over
that of non-use from an impact biomechanics perspective. This
information and the results of these analyses will subsequently be
used to support future RSA education campaigns related to bicycle
helmet use. The scientific results of these analyses will help to
quantify threshold levels of head impact associated with severe and
fatal injuries. This information will, in turn, be disseminated
internationally to helmet manufacturers and helmet standards
    organizations.

Funding for this 3-year scholarship has been generously provided by
the Road Safety Authority of Ireland. This covers all tuition fees, a
generous tax-free stipend and all project costs. The anticipated
start date for this project is January 1st 2011.

Interested applicants, in possession of at least an honours primary
degree (2H1 minimum) in mechanical engineering or a cognate
discipline, are invited to send a full curriculum vitae and contact
    details for two referees to:
