Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Cardiovascular Biomechanics
A Postdoctoral Research Scientist with strong experimental experience and interest in Cardiovascular Biomechanics is sought to join the Department of Bioengineering and the Cardiovascular Institute (Department of Medicine) at the University of Pittsburgh. The research involves the development and implementation of novel methods for quantifying right ventricular free wall (RVFW) contraction. Specifically, the normal sequence and magnitude of regional RVFW contractile patterns are to be quantified using high temporal and spatial resolution optical techniques and how these are altered in pressure overload. Longer term goal of this project will be to establish, for the first time, very high spatial and temporal resolution contractile patterns in the normal and hypertrophied right ventricle for the purposes of computational modeling validation.
The position will be jointly mentored by Michael Sacks, PhD, the John A. Swanson Professor of Bioengineering, and Marc A. Simon, MD, MS, Assistant Professor of Medicine. Work will take place in both the Cardiovascular Institute and the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Laboratory (CBL) at the University of Pittsburgh. The CBL is focused on the characterization and simulation of the structure-function biomechanical relationships of native and engineered cardiovascular soft tissues, with an emphasis on heart valves and myocardium.
Applicants should have completed a PhD or MD/PhD in Biomedical Engineering or related field, including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Applied Physics with a strong experimental background and experience in the research areas of experimental and computational biomechanics. Highly motivated candidates with a strong academic and publication record, as well as demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively are invited to apply. Applicants will be able to integrate into larger cardiovascular and bioengineering academic community, including faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, being able to take advantages of the very rich Bioengineering research community with both exceptionally strong specialized and diverse expertise at the University of Pittsburgh.
