Postdoctoral Researcher - Flock Co-ordination, Aerodynamics & Energetics
Structure & Motion Lab, Veterinary Basic Sciences, The Royal Veterinary College, University of London
    Location:  Near Potters Bar, Hawkshead
    Salary:  £30,324 pa inclusive
Fixed term post ending September 2014. Starting salary dependent on qualifications and experience.

    Reference:   VBS-0157-10
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the dynamic and successful Structure and Motion Group to work on the CARDyAL Project - Co-operative Aerodynamics and Radio-based Dynamic Animal Localisation. This four year EPSRC funded project will investigate collaborative behaviour in social animals using novel technology to obtain data. This is a joint project with the Department of Computer Science at UCL developing and using sensors to study locomotion and interaction in social animals.
You will work with the Investigators (led by Professor Alan Wilson) as part of a multidisciplinary team of four full-time Postdoctoral Researchers (three at the RVC and one at UCL) working together on the different aspects of the project, supported by an electronic design engineer and technical staff. You will be a team player keen to capitalise on the unusual opportunity for interdisciplinarity this project offers, with a passion for undertaking high quality research and addressing new challenges in biomechanics and social biology.
You should have a PhD in a science discipline and experience of zoology-related field work or behavioural testing and a good understanding of aerodynamics. Your work will focus on flock co-ordination, aerodynamics and energetics in free flying geese and pigeons using a microlight aircraft for data collection. You should be enthusiastic and highly motivated and have good organisational and interpersonal skills and be able to work with minimum supervision. For more information and application details go to:
We offer a generous reward package including a final salary pension scheme.
