The Neural Engineering Center for Artificial Limbs (NECAL) at the
Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is looking for an ambitious
Research Engineer II in mechatronics to be an integral team member of a new
project to develop a robotic prosthetic limb. This project is led by Jon
Sensinger, PhD, and our multidisciplinary team includes engineers,
prosthetists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, neuroscientists,
and physicians. NECAL has a worldwide reputation as a leader in innovated
treatment of people with limb loss including the groundbreaking "Targeted
Reinnervation" surgical technique.
The successful applicant will design, fabricate, and tests components of
mechatronic prosthetic limbs. The engineer will be responsible for the
design of gears, linkages, and components to meet required efficiencies and
safety factors, and will create CAD drawings, interact with appropriate
manufactures and machine companies, and assemble / debugs components, as
well as test components and create models to suggest future improvements.
Interested applicants should have at least a Bachelors degree in mechanical
engineering. Two years of experience in mechatronics are required, and
familiarity with gear, linkage, composite structure design, and high/low
precision tolerance design is preferred. The applicant must have experience
with 3D CAD and FEA (SolidWorks preferred) and programming software (Matlab
preferred). Other desired attributes include analytical abilities necessary
to understand complex problems and to resolve these problems through the
application of appropriate technologies, the ability to work independently
and structure time to meet deadlines, and the ability to be flexible to
changing design requirements and deliverables. The engineer should be able
to work with hand tools, electronics tools, and machine tools to fabricate,
adjust, modify, and repair devices as necessary.
