Von Mises Stresses

I would appreciate a leg-up on a question someone has asked me...
One of my colleagues walked in and asked me what von Mises stresses are.
I recall that I should be able to answer the question since I have
previously been exposed to the term but I can't remember and the texts
available to me don't have the info. I have looked in Zienkiewicz
(Finite Element Method) and Timoshenko (Theory of Elasticity) to no
avail. Can someone guide me to a book which could help my friend? We
have access to an engineering library on another campus if you can tell
us what text may provide a good explanation.
