Hi Jill,
TMJ just stands for temporo mandibular joint, and that is the joint
between the jaw and the head (two sides). Since that joint is located near
the ear, a problem in that joint can cause pain in that specific region.
However, I doubt that a doctor can have a valid diagnosis about the joint
by just looking 30 seconds in your ear.
To find out whether a joint problem is present you need to see a dentist
specialized in cranio mandibular disorders.
