  • Smooth motion

    Dear netters,

Recently, there was some discussion on this list concerning the evaluation
of jerk in a movement. There is an obvious inverse relationship between
jerk and smoothness. However, after taking a look at some of the literature, I
've found that the criteria for classifying a movement as being smooth are
    rather arbitrary.

Are there standard criteria for evaluating smoothness in, say, human gait?

Also, can smoothness be considered a goal in normal movements (that is, is
jerk minimized by neural control mechanisms) ? Any evidence?

I'll post a summary of replies as usual.

    Thanks in advance,
