ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE NEW APAS USER'S GROUP
The APAS User's Group is for those who use the Ariel Performance
Analysis System, as well as the Ariel Computerized Exercise System
(CES). This group has been started by Brian Bergemann, Ph.D. of
the United States Sports Academy for the dissemination of valuable
information that will enhance our experience, productivity and
scope of analysis that this system affords.
PHILOSOPHICAL STATEMENT: No system of this complexity is perfect.
No system can be all things to all people. Within the capabilities
and limitations of the APAS and CES systems there may be problems
that need solutions that others have resolved that will be valuable
to the rest of the users. There may be questions that need answers
that someone in APAS-land knows the answers to. There may be
workshops, conferences, job opportunities, etc. that would be of
interest to the users. There may be new products and software
available that can be integrated or upgraded with this system.
There may be components that can be integrated with the analog
system, such as goniometers, accelerometers, etc., and the users
may want to know the supplier's addresses and how to use the
components with the stock software or custom software. I will be
the editor, referee, etc. for this gopher so as to eliminate much
of the "garbage" that appears on Listservers from time to time.
I have been aware of the controversy of the product discussions
that have varied from advertisements, and endorsements to anti-
advertisements and criticisms. This user's groups is for those who
really want to improve their techniques and to learn new and better
research methodologies that are possible with these systems. Yes,
I too believe that people in biomechanics need to be able to
discuss problems with instrumentation and research methodologies,
but let us be constructive about it. Every system has its
limitations. If we all had a computer scientist, electrical
engineer, etc. on staff we could develop wonderful customized
systems. But unfortunately most of us do not have the $$$ or the
time, and "fully equipped" systems have afforded us the opportunity
to be productive almost immediately. But are they "fully
equipped"?
ACCESS TO THE APAS USER'S GROUP:
The APAS USER'S GROUP is a part of the United States Sports
Academy's gopher. Access to this gopher may be through the
University of Minnesota or through Telnet. The path you need
to follow is:
University of Minnesota gopher
other gophers and information services

USA
Alabama
United States Sports Academy
You should be in, now. If not you may have to go through Telnet.
Telnet
type:gopher.msu.edu (Michigan State University:do not
type this in parentheses)
at "login:" type: gopher
select keyword search (#3)
type: Minnesota
do the same path as above for University of Minnesota
IF YOU ARE STILL NOT INTO THE GOPHER SEND ME AN EMAIL.
The users of this gopher are free to download any files from the
APAS User's Group. The first set of files are ones that I have
used with my biomechanics class, which are a step by step set of
procedures to successfully learn and perform 2D and 3D analyses.
These protocols may not be perfect. But it is a start. I have
tried to incorporate some troubleshooting tips and warnings. If
anyone who uses these protocols finds an error or wants to add
something to it for the benefit of the other users please send me
an EMAIL message with your contribution.
POSTING ANNOUNCEMENTS, APPLICATIONS, ETC.: The APAS USER'S GROUP
gopher is for the dissemination of information from the users to
the users, or others who may be interested. Please contribute to
the Gopher. You will not be able to download any files or messages
directly to the gopher. Send any contributions, questions,
answers, problems, solutions, applications, job opportunities,
announcements, etc. to me at:
BWBERGEMANN@USSA-SPORT.USSA.EDU
I will review each contribution, edit, add to the gopher, or
incorporate the information in an already existing file. Most
files will have revision dates, so that if you download a file
today and in the future that file is upgraded a new revision date
will appear.
Happy Internet Trails to you.
