    Call for Papers for the 1995 Annual Meeting of the
    American Society of Biomechanics

    Abstract and Award Deadline: March 15, 1995

    The 1995 American Society of Biomechanics meeting will be held on the
    campus of Stanford University. Stanford University is located in the
    heart of Silicon Valley, 35 miles southeast of San Francisco and 20
    miles northwest of San Jose. The conference will include laboratory
    tours and educational tutorials on Thursday and an opening reception
    on Thursday evening, August 24. Events on Friday and Saturday, August
    25 and 26 include keynote talks, podium and poster sessions, technical
    exhibits, a student luncheon, an Awards luncheon, and an evening
    banquet.

    Abstracts and Awards nominations must be received by: March 15, 1994.

    in postscript format is included at the end of this message; you must
    save the postscript section as a separate file in order to print it)
    including authors and three (3) blind copies of the abstract (for

    Call for Award Nominations

    Borelli Award

    The American Society of Biomechanics annually awards the Giovanni
    Borelli Award to an investigator who has conducted exemplary research
    in any of the many areas of biomechanics. The Awards Committee will
    consider submissions by individuals or groups in the form of (a) an
    original unpublished research paper; or (b) a series of up to five
    published research papers on a single topic or theme. ASB members may
    also nominate others for consideration within the second category. If
    such a nomination is to be made, the member making the nomination must
    obtain permission of the nominee before submitting his or her name.

    The Borelli Award is open to all scientists except members of the ASB
    awards committee and officers of the Society. Membership in the ASB
    is not a prerequisite for eligibility.

    Criteria for selection will include originality, quality, depth of the
    research, and its relevance to the field of biomechanics as a whole.
    The award consists of a $1,000 cash prize and an engraved plaque. The
    winner of the award will be expected to present the research at the
    Borelli Lecture at the 19th Annual Meeting of the Society in Stanford,
    CA, August 24-26, 1995.

    Young Scientist Award

    The American Society of Biomechanics annually awards one postdoctoral
    and one predoctoral ASB Young Scientist Award. ASB Young Scientists
    will receive an award certificate, a $200 cash prize, and a waiver of
    conference fees for the annual meeting in which they present their
    research. Candidates may be self-nominated or nominated by an ASB
    member, must be a current or pending member of the ASB, and must have
    completed a doctoral degree with the past four years (predoctoral:
    must not have completed a doctoral degree prior to the annual meeting
    at which the award is given). Candidates must supply a current copy
    of their curriculum vitae (predoctoral: provide a short description of
    research involvement at undergraduate and/or graduate levels). The
    candidate must be the first author or only author of the paper(s) and
    must present the research (if accepted) at the annual meeting. His or
    her work may be in several formats; e.g., unpublished doctoral
    dissertation, papers submitted for publication, published articles
    (predoctoral: a letter endorsing the candidate and support of his or
    her research from the department head or graduate research advisor
    must also be submitted). The candidate must also submit an abstract
    according to the ASB annual meeting format.

    ASB Travel Award

    The American Society of Biomechanics annually awards a travel
    fellowship of up to $1000 to facilitate collaborative research and
    interaction among scientists. All ASB members are eligible to apply.
    The fellowship is intended to cover travel and lodging costs, and
    matching funds (from the host's or candidate's institution or grants)
    are desirable, but not required. The funding period is from July 1
    through June 30. Applications must include a current curriculum
    vitae, a candidate's cover letter, a letter from the host indicating
    support for the travel, a synopsis (two pages maximum) describing the
    purpose and significance of travel, and a detailed budget and
    justification (when appropriate, matching funds should be indicated).

    A short report (two pages maximum) explaining the significant outcomes
    of the travel must be submitted by the fellowship awardee to the
    Awards Committee of the ASB prior to August 31 of the following year,
    or at the end of the fellowship. Fellows will be expected to write a
    report for publication in the newsletter and they must prepare a
    poster detailing the significant outcomes of their travel for display
    in the registration area at the 1996 annual meeting.

    Notice of the ASB Travel award will be given by June 1, 1995 to allow
    at least thirty days notice before the earliest date of proposed
    travel.

    Clinical Biomechanics Award

    The American Society of Biomechanics again solicits papers to be
    considered for its Clinical Biomechanics Award, to be conferred at the
    1995 Annual Meeting. This award, sponsored in conjunction with
    Butterworth-Heinemann, publishers of Clinical Biomechanics, is
    intended to recognize outstanding biomechanics research targeting a
    contemporary clinical problem. The award includes a prize of $250 and
    an engraved plaque.

    A new procedure for award competition has been instituted for 1995.
    Full manuscript submissions will no longer be required. Rather,
    authors of ASB abstracts who wish to have their work considered for
    the Clinical Biomechanics Award should so indicate in a cover letter
    accompanying the abstract submission. The abstract title and authors
    should be listed in the cover letter. The cover letter and abstract
    must be received by the Program Chairperson by the regular deadline,
    March 15, 1995. Candidate abstracts with the highest scientific merit
    will be identified for podium presentation competition at the Annual
    Meeting, with the winning presentation being selected by the Awards
    Committee and announced at the meeting. The award recipient(s) are
    encouraged to subsequently prepare a full-length paper for editorial
    review by Clinical Biomechanics.
