    2/2/95

    Dear All,

Herewith replies received to my enquiry about gait lab technology and
centres of excellence. It came to light that a similar survey had been
done just 12 months ago. If anyone requires details of that survey
please contact Tony Redmond on hl0024p@pegasus.hud.ac.uk

Thanks again to all those who replied. From:

    Dear Dr. Helliwell,

The company providing our internet service has recently been
experiencing some system problems, so this message took three
    weeks
to not be delivered to you. They assure me that all is well now, so
I hope that this reaches you intact and that you are still interested
in responses to your request for information.

Some of our customers are using the Northern Digital OPTOTRAK
    system
for gait analysis studies. This system tracks active markers in
three dimensions. Marker positions are available in real time, as
well as being stored in a file (if desired) for post hoc analysis.
There are a number of options available for such purposes as
collection of analog data synchronized with the positional data, and
rigid body tracking. For customers wishing to develop custom
software (e.g. for feedback applications) there is an Application
    Programmer's Interface (API) available.

If you would like to receive more information about our system, or
would like to be put in contact with labs using our system for gait
    analysis, please let me know.

Best of luck with your new service,

    Margaret Fraser

    Subject: Gait Analysis Lab.
    Priority: normal

    Dear Philip,

I read your request in BIOMCH-L concerning your setting up a new gait
analysis laboratory. At the Sport University in Cologne we have a
research group experienced in conducting gait analysis for subjects
suffering chronic running or other orthopedic injuries and also for
designing children and athletic footware. In line with the
requirements we have identified for such work we have developed a
treadmill system (GaitKinetics) with inbuilt three-dimensional force
sensors for the measuring of ground reaction forces. This treadmill
has as one of its major priorities the safety of the patient and has
various features to this effect. It is supplied together with a
comprehensive software package calculating and analysing all
internationally scientifically accepted kinetic gait analysis
parameters. The system also includes further analog capabilities (EMG
would seem to be especially important for your applications), as well
as possibilities of synchronising with video signals or combining
with certain kinetic/kinematic packages available. It is an easy to
    use, Windows software driven system.
If you are interested in further information or would like further
advice on setting up your laboratory please do not hesitate to
    contact me.

    Best regards,
    Peter Brueggemann

    Dear Philip Helliwell:
The best equipment for clinical gait lab available now is VICON - video
motion analysis system, as I know. The system is manufacturing by
    Oxford
Metrix (UK) and include "VICON CLINICAL MANAGER" software.
It is exist, probably, only couple laboratories with a lot of experience
in fild what you need. The first is Motion Analysis lab Children's
    hospital
at San Diego CA, USA. This lab conduct one week clinical gait analysis
seminar directed by Dr.D.Sutherland. The second is lab Rancho Los
    Amigos CA,
    USA headed by Dr. J.Parry.

    Best lack in future work,

    Dear Phillip

Contact Prof Peter Bowker School of prosthetics and orthotics salford
    univ
uk or Dr Neil Messenger Chelsea school univ of Brighton eastbourne
    uk
(probably the latter as peter bowker is not at work at present) and ask
them for a copy of the clinical gait analysis survey they did for the UK
    in 1989,

    Hope this helps

I'd suggest contacting Dr's David Krebs and Pat Riley at Mass. General
Hosp. Pat has been running the Biomotion lab there for many years. I
believe they have looked a lot at both cp and stroke patients. Their
    email addresses are:
