MAGNETIC POS. SYS. QUESTION

I'm doing my senior report on 3-D position and orientation system.
The brand name is "The Flock of Birds" and it works by emitting a
magnetic field then the receiver picks up where it is in relation to
this transmitter. I have the operation guide but no info on how it
works. If anybody could briefly explain, or tell me where I could find
out more it would be very much appeciated.
