    QUT is one of Australia's largest universities operating on four campuses
    with 25,000 students.

    This new position will be located within the School of Mechanical and
    Manufacturing Engineering, one of six schools in the Faculty of Built
    Environment and Engineering. The School has three existing professorial
    positions: the MIM Professor of Maintenance Engineering, the Fuchs Professor
    of Tribology, and a Professor of Manufacturing Systems Engineering.

    In 1994 the School introduced a four year full-time BE(Medical) course aimed
    at producing graduate engineers to work in the design, manufacture and
    maintenance of medical, sport and health related products and services. The
    successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and enhancing
    delivery of this course. He/She will lead a group of researchers within the
    School as part of the Biomedical Science and Engineering Unit (BSEU) (a
    collaborative venture between the Schools of Human Movement Studies,
    Mechanical &
    Manufacturing Engineering, and Physics), and in addition, will be expected
    to establish close liaison with the medical profession, health related
    agencies and relevant manufacturing and servicing industries.

    Women are under-represented at QUT at this level; therefore suitably
    qualified women are encouraged to apply.

    QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS: Applicants must have a PhD degree in engineering,
    engineering science or related discipline. They should have extensive
    experience in any of the following areas: tissue biomechanics, engineering
    biomaterials, biomedical instrumentation, biomedical product design and
    development, and rehabilitation/clinical engineering.

    CONDITIONS: Tenurable appointment is available at the level of Professor
    ($80,176 per annum as of 6 February 1995). Conditions include subsidised
    superannuation, relocation assistance and professional experience leave. New
    professors at QUT are eligible for a $25,000 grant to use on work related
    projects. Smoking is not permitted in QUT buildings or vehicles.

    Duties

    General Standard

    A Professor is expected to exercise a special responsibility in providing
    leadership and in fostering excellence in research, teaching, professional
    activities and policy development in the academic discipline within the
    school or other comparable organisational unit, within the institution and
    within the community, both scholarly and general.

    Specific Duties

    Specific duties of a Professor may include:

    Academic Leadership

    Play an active role in the maintenance of academic standards and in the
    development of educational policy and of curriculum areas within
    the discipline.
    Initiate new research and teaching programs.
    Attract and supervise postgraduate students.
    Provide advice and support to staff and students to advance their
    scholarship and research.
    Involvement in administrative matters within the School and the Institution.
    Foster a national and international exchange of ideas and debate in the
    discipline.

    Research and Scholarship

    Conduct research that sets standards for the discipline.
    Foster and actively develop the research commitment, skills and
    performance of other staff and students.
    Contribute to the improvement of the research methodology of the
    discipline.
    Contribute to the peer review of research.
    Contribute actively to research activities and research
    dissemination of learned societies, professional bodies and
    international organisations.
    Supervise postgraduate students in order to train them to a
    research standard which achieves peer recognition, and to foster
    their life-long learning.
    Accept the responsibility for organising and administering
    research facilities and personnel in the discipline.

    Teaching performance and leadership

    Foster and maintain excellence in teaching, and contribute
    actively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs.
    Develop and promote innovative teaching methods and life-long learning.
    Undergo teaching performance evaluation.
    Provide advice to other staff within the discipline to enhance their
    teaching skills.

    Professional leadership

    Participate in and provide leadership in community affairs,
    particularly those related to the discipline, in professional,
    commercial and industrial sectors where appropriate.
    Serve on outside bodies, commissions and committees, interacting
    with the media where relevant and representing the University in
    Federal, State, industrial and commercial policy-making.

    Other duties may include:

    If called upon, to serve as Acting Head in the absence of the Head of School.
    Act as the course coordinator for ME46 Bachelor of Engineering (Medical)
    course.
    If agreed with other members of the Unit, to serve as Director for the
    Biomedical Science & Engineering Unit (BSEU).

    Criteria for selection

    Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties
    prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required
    for the position.

    To be appointed as a Professor a candidate must meet the following
    selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the
    University Council -
    completion of a doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline
    area or equivalent accreditation or standing.

    distinguished level of attainment in two of the four areas of
    achievement namely, teaching performance and leadership, research and
    scholarship, academic leadership and professional leadership, at least one of
    which must be in teaching performance and leadership or research and
    scholarship.

    meritorious level of attainment in the two remaining areas of
    achievement (see attached definitions)

    demonstrated good communicational and interpersonal skills.

    Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in
    areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a
    doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.
