Job description: Write C++ computer programs on a 586 PC computer for data
collection and analysis in a biomechanics laboratory. Currently we are
studying the biomechanics of people carrying heavy backpacks. Some, but not
all, of the work may be done off-site. In addition to programming, you may
also be asked to help with other aspects of biomechanics experimentation.

Starting date: We would like you to start by early September, but there is
some flexibility. It will take at least 3 weeks to complete the hiring
    process.

Qualifications: The applicant must be very competent in computer programming.
Experience in the C computer language would be very helpful. U.S. citizenship
would help avoid some difficulty in getting you approved to work at the
    institute.

Salary: $10-15 per hour, depending on educational level and experience. You can
work 20-40 hours per week as desired, with some flexibility of hours. We may
be able to arrange for a fixed fee for a completed program. A total of $11,000
is available for the current project.

Institute background: The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine
was established to help soldiers contend with the physical and psychological
stresses related to harsh environmental conditions, and difficult physical and
psychological tasks. The institute is recognized worldwide for its work in the
physiology of heat, cold, altitude, exercise, and nutrition. Work experience
at the institute would be very favorably regarded by prospective employers.

Environment: The institute is on a campus-like setting on lake Cochituate.
Recreational facilities include a swimming-pool, tennis and basketball courts,
    a weight-room, and softball fields.

Transportation and living: The lab is about 30 minutes west of Boston by car,
with easy access via the Mass Pike or Route 9. There is also a commuter train
from Boston that takes about 35 minutes, and runs mainly during commuting hours.
It is about a 15 minute walk from the train station to the lab.
