Below is a position description for a Lecturer in Biomechanics at Victoria
University, Australia. The successful applicant will be joining a team of
four other biomechanics academic staff (equivalent full-time) and two full-
time consultants, a brand new $1M laboratory in the middle of Melbourne's
Central Business District, 25 postgraduate research students and an
extensive teaching and collaborative research profile. The position

Lecturer in Biomechanics:
Victoria University of Technology and the Department of Physical
Education and Recreation invites applications to the following lecturing
position at the City campus commencing in the early part of 1996.
Depending on qualifications and experience, an appointment will be made
on either Level A or B.
At Lecturer A, the appointee will be required to lecture and tutor in
established biomechanics programmes at the undergraduate and
postgraduate levels. Applicants should have a masters degree or
equivalent. Tertiary teaching experience in biomechanics is essential.
Undergraduate qualifications in Physical Education or Sport Sciences are
desirable. PhD is preferred.
At Lecturer B, in addition to lecturing and tutoring duties, the
appointee will be expected to develop an active research profile in
applied sport science including a willingness to publish and seek
relevant research grants. He/she will also supervise postgraduate
students. Applicants should have a relevant PhD or equivalent and
evidence of a developing record and interest in research and research
supervision. A proven teaching ability at tertiary level in
biomechanics and related areas is essential.

Level B: $42,198 - $50,111
This is a tenurable appointment for an initial period of 3 years. Six
months prior to the expiry of the three-year appointment a tenure review
will be carried out at which time the incumbent may be granted tenure.

LABORATORY FEATURES
The brand new laboratory consists of a main laboratory area (about 36m x 10m)
that can be used as one large laboratory or the capability of being curtained
off into a maximum of four areas (about 9m x 10m each), a separate isokinetic
dynamometry laboratory, a 50 chair teaching area, 2 equipment control rooms,
a consultancy office (for 2 consultants), a workshop, a store room, a
staff/student room, disabled access throughout, men's and women's showers and
changing rooms, and men's, women's and disabled toilets.
The laboratory is situated in the basement of an 18 storey office building
that includes 8 floors of parking and biomechanics staff rooms on the 11th
floor. The laboratory takes up over half of the floor space in the basement.
The remaining floor space is occupied by a wet anatomy lab. (due to begin
operations early 1996).
MAJOR RESEARCH AREAS
The Biomechanics Unit has quite definite areas that we see as being our
'Major Research Areas'. These general areas are currently identified as;
Real-time Integrated Biomechanical Analysis System (RIBAS) Development;
Clinical Orthopaedic Biomechanics; Clinical and Sports Coaching Tools
Development. There are many sub-areas within this major research focus.
