You may already be aware of Professor Allen Goodship's work on hyperthermia of the equine tendo-achilles.
(or at least I believe it was that tendon).
In which he clearly showed that the damaged found in practice, tied in well with temperature measurements
made in-vivo.
This he has hypothesised is due to energy absorption during running.
