Gait Abnormalities in Children with Cerebral Palsy: Evaluation
and Treatment

Goals: To review the cause and treatments of gait disorders in
cerebral palsy.
Purpose: Current treatments and methods of evaluation will be
presented by recognized experts to aid clinicians in their role
as advisors, decision makers and care givers for children with
cerebral palsy (CP).
Course Description: The course will cover normal and
pathologic gait patterns as related to CP. Patient evaluation
will be described to include: physical assessment, gait
analysis, Gross Motor Function Measure, dynamometer
measurements of muscle strength, and EMG. Treatment
indications and outcomes will be presented for orthopaedic
surgery, rhizotomy, bracing and medications like botulinum.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
-define normal gait characteristics using 3-D motion analysis
-demonstrate gait deviations caused by CP
-define the role of muscle strengthening as a treatment for CP
-discuss the use of EMG and gait analysis for planning
-describe variations in muscle architecture and the effects of
surgery on muscle function
-define indications and expectations from current treatments

cerebral palsy. Family members of persons with CP are also
invited.
Registration Fee: Course fee: $100 for physicians, $75 for all
others. Fee includes lectures, syllabus, lunch, refreshments
and CME accreditation.
