  • searching the archives and E-mail addresses

    Dear subscribers,

    The list of Biomch-L subscribers can be obtained by sending
    REV BIOMCH-L (C to listserv@nic.surfnet.nl. Always try this
    first before posting a request for an E-mail address. There are
    also other methods to find E-mail addresses, for instance through
    university Web sites, or using telnet://bruno.cs.colorado.edu.

    If you remember having seen a posting on Biomch-L, you can use
    several methods to find it again:

    1. If you remember the month approximately, you can use
    gopher://hearn.nic.surfnet.nl and browse the archives for that
    period.

    2. If you know keywords, submit a database job to
    listserv@nic.surfnet.nl. Example:

    // JOB Echo=No
    Database Search DD=Rules
    //Rules DD *
    search for bone and (freezing or frozen) in Biomch-L
    index
    /*

    Listserv then returns a numbered list of postings which contain
    these keywords. Then, submit the same job again, and replace the
    'index' by 'print item1, item2, item2 ...', where item1 etc. are
    the numbers of the postings you want to read.

    3. I have also seen Biomch-L postings come up while searching the
    Web using Lycos. Only the directories of the gopher server are
    indexed, not the full text of each message, so the item will only
    show up if the keywords are found in the Subject: of the posting.

    This method will also result in a lot of 'false positive'
    matches, unless the keywords are quite unique. Lycos can be
    reached at: http://lycos.cs.cmu.edu/ .
