After reading the posting by Michael Lee
i was curious about the generation of the FEM
model...
Where is the data derived from for the mechanical properties
of elements of the tooth -- i.e. surface and deeper layers of
enamel and deeper dentine.... ?
i know of some work done a while ago by Sidney Lees et al on measuring
the properties of enamel using UCR (Ultrasound Critical-angle Reflection).
He found the material was heterogeneous and also anisotropic.
Is the data from bulk mechanical testing of whole teeth used for FEM models?
Is this adequate? Seems to me it would be very incomplete and quite presumptious
to model the entire tooth based on either bulk measurements or on measurements of
one part alone. A complete measurement of elastic properties and anisotropy is
conceptually possible using UCR, and i wonder (aloud, to colleagues listening in :-) )
if this has been attempted by any other means....
