  • Research project on biomechanics in Japan

    Dear BIOMCH-L subscriber:

A big research project entitled "Biomechanics of Structure and Function of
Living Cells, Tissues, and Organs" was launched in 1992, and very
successfully continued for 3 years, being financially supported by a
Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas from the Ministry of
Education, Science, and Culture, Japan with myself as the principal
investigator. The budget of the project was totally US$7millions. Since
we don't need to pay for students and postdoctoral fellows from this kind
of budget in Japan, we could use this budget only for research equipments,
    experimental supplies, and travel expenses.

The project was composed of the following 5 programs: 1) Mechanical
properties of living cells, tissues, and organs; 2) Biomechanics of
orthopaedic systems and motion analysis; 3) Biomechanics of the circulatory
system; 4) Computational biomechanics; and 5) Functional adaptation and
remodeling of biological tissues and organs. A report of the project
which includes brief summaries of the results obtained from all the
research programs is published by the end of this month, although it is all
written in Japanese. In additon to this report, however, to document the
unique and important results from the project, we edited three books
entitled "Data Book on Mechanical Properties of Living Cells, Tissues, and
Organs", "Biomechanics - Functional Adaptation and Remodeling", and
"Computational Biomechanics" for the above mentioned research programs 1),
5), and 4), respectively. The first volume contains basic data collected
from published articles and also presents original data obtained from the
project. The second and third volumes contain 13 and 12 original
monographs on cardiovascular, orthopaedic, and orthodontic biomechanics.
These books have been published from Springer-Verlag, Tolyo.

If you have any question on the project, please feel free to contact me.

    Sincerely yours,

    Kozaburo Hayashi
