    FIRST CONFERENCE

    INTERNATIONAL SHOULDER GROUP

    DELFT, THE NETHERLANDS

    PRE-CONFERENCE TO THE
10TH CONFERENCE OF THE EUROPEAN SOCIETY OF BIOMECHANICS

First Conference of the International Shoulder Group

On behalf of the International Shoulder Group, we proudly announce the First Conference
of the International Shoulder Group which will take place at August 26 & 27, 1996 in Delft,
The Netherlands. This conference is an official pre-conference to the 10th Conference of the
European Society of Biomechanics at August 28-31 in Leuven, Belgium.

The conference will be organized by the Dutch Shoulder Group which consists of the dept.
of Human Movement Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the dept. of Orthopaedics,
University Hospital Leiden, and the dept. of Mechanical Engineering and Marine
    Technology, Delft University of Technology.

The International Shoulder Group is a collaboration of shoulder researchers all over the
world. It offers regular contacts before, during and after conferences of the International
Society of Biomechanics, European Society of Biomechanics and the World Congress of
Biomechanics. Many bi-lateral contacts have been established between researchers during
these meetings, resulting in the exchange of data and pre-prints, and in laboratory visits. The
International Shoulder Group will apply to become an official "Working Group" of the
International Society of Biomechanics, aiming at the status of an official "Technical Group".
This conference will be the first official meeting of the International Shoulder Group.

The conference is primarily open to members of the International Shoulder Group. Other
participants are kindly requested to become a member (no financial obligations!), or will be
admitted on a first come/first served base. Since the informal interaction between the
participants is one of the goals of the conference, the number of participants is limited to 75.

    About the conference
The shoulder is probably one of the most complex joints of the human body, offering a wide
range of motion accompanied by the ability to exert forces in almost any direction. Due to
its complex structure, three-dimensional motions and many muscle layers, it confronts the
researcher with many problems concerning experimental methods and functional theories.
This big challenge is a common factor between all shoulder researchers, and results in a very
    co-operative attitude and open-minded discussions.

The goal of the Conferences of the International Shoulder Group is to establish a regularly
direct contact between its members, and other researchers focussing on the shoulder.
Therefore, the conference provide plenty of room for discussions and direct contacts outside
the conference hours. Especially for graduate students, it should be an opportunity to expose
their work to the larger shoulder community, and to meet faculty from other laboratories.
Abstracts can be submitted shortly before the conference starts. An abstract book will be
provided at the start of the conference. The abstracts will be available on WWW and a ftp-
site a few weeks before the conference.

opportunity to visit the laboratories of the Dutch Shoulder Group in Delft, Leiden and
    Amsterdam.

    Abstracts and Proceedings
At the start of the conference, an abstract book will be available for the participants. Each
presenter will be requested to submit a 6 page paper at the time of the conference. Papers
will be reviewed and published in Conference Proceedings.
