    BIOMECHANICS Session @NAFEMS World Congress '97
    In recognition of the growing use of FE and other analysis techniques
    in the biomechanics field I would like to add a session dedicated to this
    important subject area at our 1997 Conference, in Stuttgart.

    I have also received agreement to extend the deadline for abstracts
    to the 30th July to give people time to respond.

    Since this is my personal initiative I would like this to be a
    really good session, with presentations from all of the leading
    experts in this field. So if you know of someone who would give a
    good paper can you please contact them to encourage them to submit an
    abstract.

    Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    OBJECTIVES
    The ever increasing competitiveness of world-wide industry places escalating
    requirements for the rapid and near optimal design of both products and their
    manufacturing processes. The design cycle generally involves an interactive
    procedure commencing from a conceptual initial design, through simulation of
    the product or structural performance, appraisal of its "fitness for purpose"
    with regard to stated objectives, followed by changes aimed at achieving a
    near-optimal design. The remarkable (and continuing) developments in computer
    hardware makes it increasingly possible to use computational techniques for
    almost all stages of the design procedure. Virtual prototyping promises significant
    improvements in both product development costs and time to market and is a
    major driving force in the introduction of computational tools to the industrial
    environment.

    DESIGN - Initial parametric designs rely heavily on solid modelling and CAD
    facilities, with data transfer protocols and CAD/analysis links remaining ongoing
    R & D issues. Quality Assurance requirements, the necessity for Engineer
    Registration and Training & Education issues are also topics of current debate.

    SIMULATION - The numerical algorithms necessary for efficient and robust
    simulation of complex structural and material performance have witnessed a
    dramatic improvement in recent years and the ever increasing computer power
    available makes the solution of more complex behaviours possible, such as coupled
    or multi-physics problems. It is therefore essential to validate that constitutive
    models accurately represent the system response and that the numerical solution
    procedures developed can be reliably employed in practical circumstances.

    OPTIMISATION - Recently there has been a re-emergence of interest in the
    application of optimisation techniques to industrial design problems, brought
    about both by increasing computational power and an improved maturity of
    solution algorithms. These procedures, when coupled with computational
    strategies such as adaptive mesh refinement promise to automate much of the
    structural/manufacturing process design cycle.

    The basic objective of the conference is to bring together practitioners and developers
    in the field of computational modelling to examine issues related to automated
    optimal design in order to summarise the current position and to identify future
    requirements.


    FORMAT
    A series of technical sessions are planned, each initiated by a keynote lecture by a
    distinguished contributor to a particular aspect of the subject. These presentations
    will be complemented by a number of contributed papers. Invited contributions
    to each subject area will also be organised by a designated co-ordinator.
    The presented papers will be collected in a proceedings volume that will be
    provided to the participants at the time of the conference.
