    RESEARCH SUPPORT SPECIALIST

    For the Musculo-Skeletal Research Laboratories (MSRL)
    and the
    Graduate Program In Biomedical Engineering (PIBE)
    State University of New York at Stony Brook

    A position as a Research Support Specialist to work jointly with the MSRL and the PIBE is
    available immediately.

    BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

    MSRL: The Musculo-Skeletal Research Laboratories focus on the physical mechanisms
    involved in the control of tissue growth, healing, and homeostasis, and how these
    mechanisms can be utilized in the treatment and prevention of disease and injury. The
    group emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to these problems, from the in vitro to the
    clinical level. More information on the labs can be found at:

    PIBE: To foster the training of graduate students in this discipline, as well as Medical
    Imaging, Biomaterials, and Computational Modeling, we have established a Graduate Program
    in Biomedical Engineering, which is structured as an interdisciplinary training
    environment for students with an engineering background or interest. More information on

    FUNCTION OF JOB: The research support specialist will be directly responsible for the
    overall management of the facilities in six teaching and research labs. This includes
    responsibility for the upkeep of the laboratory computer systems (eight networked Unix
    and five 486-class pc workstations) and PIBE computer system (five networked Pentium-class
    Windows95 workstations) as well as upkeep of laboratory equipment.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    - maintain computers & LAN which include 8 Unix (two IBM RS6000) & 10 pc workstations
    - oversee computer system security, including backup of valuable electronic documents
    - resolve inquiries or direct personnel to references pertaining to the use of computers
    - assist in development and use of data collection systems
    - serve as primary contact for service contractors, suppliers, etc.
    - provide support on individual and team projects for students as well as faculty
    - supervise students in the use of laboratory equipment

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND GIVEN: Oral and written instructions from faculty. Employees in
    this class supervise the overall operation of labs. Supervisor to undergraduate and
    graduate students.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    - operating system expertise (UNIX, Windows95) necessary
    - software experience (BASIC, FORTRAN and/or C) necessary
    - experience with graphics software and digital image analysis experience needed
    - experience with use of computer-controlled, high frequency, data collection helpful
    - numerical modelling experience helpful
    - electronics background helpful
    - college graduate, M.S. in engineering preferred, biomedical engineering helpful
