I would be grateful if you would pass this information on to honours
students wishing to pursue research for a higher degree in the field of soft
tissue biomechanics.
This position was recently advertised in The Australian Higher Education
Supplement (11/9/96) and read as follows:
QUT/Instron Research Scholarship
in Clinical Biomechanics
Material Properties of Biological Tissues
QUT's School of Human Movement Studies in conjunction with Instron Australia
Pty, Ltd is offering a research scholarship for a PhD study in a clinical
biomechanics project.
The project will involve studying the time dependant material properties of
soft biological tissues. Aspects of prolonged stretching and cyclic loading
on the performance of ligamentous structures and joint capsules will be
investigated.
We are seeking an honours or 1A or 2A graduate to pursue PhD studies in this
area. Applicants should have experience in materials testing techniques for
biological tissues and a sound basis in the theory of strength of materials.
It is desirable that the person be familiar with the fundamental principles
of both biological and engineering sciences; be experienced in the use of a
range of materials testing equipment and have a keen interest in the
application of mechanics to the functional interpretation of biological
structures.
The research will be based at the Kelvin Grove campus in the Faculty of
Health of Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
An annual stipend of approximately AU$15,364 is available, initially for one
year renewable subject to satisfactory progress and additional funding from
granting bodies.
Applications, including academic record, details of research experience and
two referees should reach Professor Tony Parker or Dr James Smeathers,
School of Human Movement Studies by Friday 27 September
