  • Ankle braces and joint kinetics

    Dear Biomch-L Readers:

I am currenlty doing research looking at the effects of selected
semi-rigid ankle orthoses (Active Ankle & Aircast) on ground
reaction forces and EMG activity of the peroneals during a
functional movement. Many ankle brace comparative studies have
evaluated joint kinematics during passive movements through the
use of isokinetic dynamometers and various goniometers.
However, little attention has been given to understanding the
effects these braces have on joint moments or ground reaction forces
(GRF's). Some studies have looked at the effects of shoe
construction (see references below) on ankle joint moments and
GRF's, but I have only come across 2 studies that have actually
evaluated the effects of an ankle brace (Aircast Sports Stirrup)
on GRF's. If anyone knows of any other sources on this topic or has any
suggestions, I would definately appreciate the assistance. Below, is a
partial list of references concerning shoe construction or ankle bracing
on joint kinetics and GRF's. As always a summary of responses
will be provided to the list. Thanks.
