FIFTH TRIENNIAL CONFERENCE
NEURAL PROSTHESES: MOTOR SYSTEMS V
N P ' 9 7
Time: August, 16-21, 1997
Place: Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
Organized by:
The International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society
and
Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, Canada
PURPOSE
The second annual meeting of the International Functional Electrical
Stimulation Society (IFESS) is being organized to promote the exchange of
new knowledge and technology in the field of FES. It will take place
August 16-21, 1997 in Burnaby, B.C., Canada. This meeting aims to bring
together the most prominent specialists in the field in order to stimulate
exchange of views and achievements. The meeting will be concerned with the
state of the art and the assessment of advances in various applications of
FES for restoring motor function. Emphasis will be placed on
multidisciplinary and system approaches, clinical applications and the
functional benefits of assistive devices in terms of quality of life and
social participation of the disabled. The potential for the use of
techniques to promote regeneration of the central and peripheral nervous
system will be introduced for the first time as a topic of the IFESS
meeting, and the meeting will start with an invited lecture honoring the
pioneering work of Richard Bunge in promoting multidisciplinary approaches
to studying rehabilitation of humans with spinal cord injury.
The objectives of the Neural Prostheses: Motor System V Conference are to:
1) educate young researchers in a highly specialized but rapidly developing
field;
2) expedite the transfer of neural prostheses through the development cycle
from the engineering laboratory to the clinic and the manufacturing
industry; and
3) integrate engineering and clinical expertise in the development and
application of devices to restore voluntary function for individuals with
motor disabilities. The focus of this conference is the integration of
engineering and neuroscience research efforts in order to accomplish these
3 objectives. This international meeting follows from a series of
conferences held every three years under the primary sponsorship of the
Engineering Foundation, New York. The intention of the organizers of the
NP'97 meeting is to change somewhat the format of the meeting to allow the
integration with the IFESS'97.
Although the conference has a busy schedule it is being organized in a
flexible way to leave sufficient free time for direct contacts and
discussions among participants. Afternoons will be used for various
activities such as round table discussions, special sessions, video
presentations and hardware demonstrations. Because of the size of the
combined meeting, most contributions will be presented in poster form, and
only general and review contributions will be presented orally.
FORMAT
The format of the conference provides a unique opportunity for exchanging
information among leading developers of neural prostheses and for the
introduction on new concepts and techniques in a casual and open
environment. The conference site is remote, yet accessible to major
transportation. The conference length is five days. Participants arrive
on a Saturday (taking advantage of low air fares) and conference sessions
are held through Thursday noon with morning and evening sessions daily.
Some session will have a typical Motor Prostheses Conference format with
two moderators and one or two discussants to critique presentations and
stimulate discussion. When most relevant to the subject, disabled
individuals and clinicians will serve as moderators or discussants to
insure a clinically relevant focus. Afternoon throughout the week are
intentionally left open for casual ad hoc discussions among participants.
Poster and some plenary sessions for oral presentations will be held from
Sunday through Thursday. following the oral presentations in the morning,
and evening session. All graduate student participants to the Conference
must submit a poster to the meeting, which will provide a forum for their
active participation in the meeting. The following sessions are organized
using the Motor Prosthesis format:
NP1. The neuro-regeneration of the central nervous system - reality or future?
NP2. Technology transfer and multi-center trials
NP3. Central vs. reflex control, the role of sensory driven and central
pattern generator models in the design of FES systems
NP4. The role of learning and habituation in control of movements -
plasticity of the CNS after injury
NP5. Open Discussion - Motor Systems VI Meeting
TOPICS for IFESS'97
Papers dealing with advances and indications for devices, evaluation
problems and procedures, measurement methods, clinical practice and
benefits in the following areas are invited:
1. Upper limb movement
2. Lower limb movement
3. Respiratory function
4. Bladder/bowel/sexual function
5. Prevention of secondary complications of paralysis
6. Dynamic myoplasty
7. Stimulation/sensor technology
8. Control strategies
9. Regeneration of the central and nervous system
10. Electrical stimulation used for therapy
RULES FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
1. Deadline for receipt of abstracts is 15 March 1997. Notification of
acceptance is guaranteed by 1 May 1997.
2. An abstract may be selected as either a 10 minute oral presentation or a
poster presentation at the discretion of the Scientific Organizing
Committee. Authors should indicate their preference.
3. Presenters will be required to register and pay the registration fee.
Presenters are responsible for their travel and per diem expenses.
4. All accepted abstracts will be published in the Conference Abstract Book.
5. Abstracts should be written in English, the official language of the
conference.
6. Content of abstract is NOT TO EXCEED 250 WORDS and must contain the
following:
a) Title: make the title brief, but indicate clearly the topic of the
investigation;
b) Authors: use initials plus family name for each author, include
affiliations;
c) state the purpose of the study (preferably in one sentence);
d) state the methods used;
e) summarize the results in sufficient detail to support the conclusions;
f) summarize the conclusions reached (it is not sufficient to say that
"results will be discussed");
g) figures and references should not be included;
h) formulae should, in general, be avoided;
i) the use of standard abbreviations is desirable. Special or unusual
abbreviation should come in brackets after the full word when it first
appears in the text. Do not use abbreviations in the title;
j) Save the abstract as an ASCII file for electronic transmission. Send
it in the body of an e-mail message to IFESS97@ETF.BG.AC.YU. If electronic
mail is not available, abstracts printed in a 12 point helvetica/arial font
(two copies) will be accepted if received by mail prior to the deadline.
RULES FOR MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
The authors whose abstracts are accepted for presentation will be asked to
submit a camera ready copy of the complete manuscript before 1 June 1997.
Only original papers which The instructions for preparation of the
manuscript are identical to the rules used for IEEE EMBS conferences, and
the length of the contributions are limited to maximum of 4 pages.
Detailed instructions concerning the manuscript will be sent to the first
author of each of the accepted abstracts.
PUBLICATIONS
An abstract book will be available to all participants at registration. A
