    3-Year Ph.D. Scholarship

    An new Ph.D. student is sought to undertake research into exercise
    rehabilitation
    following spinal cord injury using FES of lower-limb muscles. This project=
    is a=20
    collaboration wiith an indistry partner (Multi-Tems P/L, Sydney, Australia) =
    to=20
    develop a new prototype FES exercise device for patent and international=20
    distribution. The successful candidate will receive an Australian=
    Postgraduate=20
    Award (Industry) for up to three years of full-time doctoral research.=20

    Essential Criteria: The successful applicant must have an undergraduate=
    degree
    in biomedical engineering, medicine, physiotherapy, human physiology or=20
    biochemistry, human movement studies, electrical engineering, mechanical=20
    engineering, or a similar field. The applicant must also have a=
    research-based=20
    honours degree, masters degree (by research) or equivalent research
    experience to=20
    be eligible for doctoral studies within the Faculty of Health Sciences. The
    applicant
    must have good communication skills. Finally, the applicant must be an
    Australian=20
    citizen or permanent resident of Australia who is able to undertake Ph.D.
    candidacy
    in the first or second semester of 1997.=20

    Desirable Criteria: Previous work experience and a solid background in=
    exercise=20
    conditioning as rehabilitation for individuals with disease or disability is
    an asset.=20
    Previous experience with analogue/digital data acquisition and computer
    language=20
    programming in one or more of C/C++, Delphi=AE, Visual Basic=AE, Labview=AE,=
    Fortran,
    or another low-level programming language would aid the successful applicant=
    in=20
    undertaking this project.=20

    Period of Scholarship: The Ph.D. scholarship is for 3 years with the
    possibility of a=20
    further offer of up to 1 year subject to need and the availability of
    funding. The scholarship
    is tenable from Semester 1, 1997 but must be undertaken no later than
    Semester II, 1997.

    Value of Scholarship: The APAI award is $20,180 (tax-free) in 1997. The
    scholarship=20
    is value-indexed for 1998 and 1999. There are generous allowances for
    relocation=20
    expenses from within Australia oroverseas for the successful applicant and
    dependents.
