    PH.D. ENGINEERING POSITION AT VERMONT BACK RESEARCH CENTER

    Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation
    College of Medicine, University of Vermont


    The Vermont Back Research Center has an opening for a Ph.D.-level
    rehabilitation or ergonomic engineer, to plan, direct, and conduct
    biomechanical and rehabilitation engineering research to reduce back=20
    and spine injuries and disability. This position requires previous=20
    experience in research and professional publication and the ability=20
    to manage multiple projects and project teams. The position available
    is for a postdoctoral associate but carries the potential for becoming
    a research, non-tenure-track faculty position. This represents an
    opportunity to collaborate with an established group of researchers=20
    (including Rowland Hazard, M.D., Dryver Huston, Ph.D., Martin Krag, M.D.,
    and Mary Moffroid, Ph.D.) that has been productive for over ten years.=20



    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION=20

    90% Research. Design, supervise, and conduct research in rehabilitation
    engineering, assistive technology, and ergonomics as they relate to spinal
    disorders, especially low back pain; Develop, write, and submit proposals
    for external funding; Design and develop research protocols; Assign,
    supervise, and review work of support staff (may include graduate
    students, medical students, lab technicians, orthopaedic residents and
    fellows, and work study students); Ensure that appropriate protocols and
    procedures are followed e.g., compliance with federal and IRB regulations
    governing the conduct of research); Conduct and supervise data
    acquisition, statistical analysis, and interpretation of experimental
    results; Write and prepare research results for publication in peer-
    reviewed and trade publications. Present research findings at national
    meetings (e.g., Human Factors Society, North American Spine Society,
    International Industrial Ergonomics and Safety Conference, Rehabilitation
    Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America, American
    Society of Biomechanics). Work with the Center's Information Services
    Division to distribute new research findings in a variety of formats and
    to diverse audiences.=20

    5% Training. Design, develop, and implement academic and training=20
    programs in the areas of rehabilitation engineering, assistive=20
    technology, human factors, and ergonomics. Prepare and conduct=20
    presentations and training programs for people with disabilities, service=
    =20
    providers, researchers, employers, health care professionals, and others.

    5% Development Activities. Develop contacts with industrial partners and=
    =20
    pursue avenues for the commercialization and marketing of new devices. =20
    Develop, write, and negotiate grants and contracts to provide=20
    rehabilitation engineering, assistive technology and ergonomic services=20
    for federal, state, and local government agencies and industry. Develop=20
    project plans including the development of timelines, budgets, resources,=
    =20
    and deliverables. Develop outside contacts and relationships critical to=
    =20
    a service program, including marketing systems, distributors, major=20
    contracts and participation in local, state, and national rehabilitation=20
    engineering, assistive technology and ergonomic programs.


    REQUIREMENTS=09

    Necessary Skills and Training=20

    =A5 Ph.D. in biomedical, industrial, rehabilitation,=20
    mechanical, or ergonomic engineering. =20

    =A5 Knowledge of research design, methods, statistics,=20
    ethics, and publication. =20

    =A5 Experience conducting biomechanical, ergonomic, and/or=20
    rehabilitation engineering research. =20

    =A5 Ability to manage multiple projects and project teams.


    USEFUL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE =20

    =A5 Knowledge of orthopaedic biomechanics, rehabilitation=20
    engineering, assistive technology, and ergonomics.=20

    =A5 Ability to work and make decisions independently.=20

    =A5 Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, particularly with=20
    respect to the spine.

    =A5 Working knowledge of electronics instrumentation. This=20
    includes recording instruments such as motion analysis systems,=20
    oscilloscopes, amplifiers, filters, isolation transformers,=20
    data acquisition boards, electronic troubleshooting, and=20
    design.=20

    =A5 Working knowledge of computer programming and application=20
    programs (such as WordPerfect, Harvard Graphics, Power Point or other=20
    presentation graphics, dBase, Lotus/Excel, ProComm, and Labview) including=
    =20
    custom-designed software packages.=20

    =A5 Ability to use statistical software packages and perform=20
    statistical analysis of research data.=20

    =A5 Knowledge, experience, and competency in device, product,=20
    and machine design.=20

    =A5 Basic prototyping machine shop skills (i.e. lathe,=20
    milling machine, TIG, arc, and oxy-acetylene welding).=20

    =A5 Experience in scientific writing and familiarity with=20
    author guidelines for professional publication (those of specific=20
    journals or of the International Committee of Medical Journal=20
    Editors) and grant applications. =20

    =A5 Familiarity with federal guidelines on human subjects=20
    research. =20

    =A5 Knowledge and experience in developing scientific=20
    presentations, and familiarity with presenting research findings=20
    to the scientific and lay communities (at local, national, and=20
    international levels).=20

    =A5 Knowledge of legislation and regulations as they relate=20
    to occupational injuries, accommodation, and civil rights of people=20
    with disabilities.=20

    =A5 Skills in contract development and negotiation.=20

    =A5 Experience working with people with disabilities.=20

    =A5 Ability to communicate clearly and promptly throughout=20
    the organization.=20

    =A5 Experience providing rehabilitation engineering,=20
    assistive technology, and ergonomic services.=20



    VERMONT BACK RESEARCH CENTER

    The Vermont Back Research Center aims to improve the functional ability
    and quality of life of people with back problems, especially low back
    pain, through research, product development and testing, education, and
    consulting. The Center maintains a comprehensive and integrated program
    of research and is a national source of information on low back pain,
    injury, impairment, and disability. This multidisciplinary research
    program and a variety of information services are designed to improve the
    employability of people with back pain impairment or disability. Research
    projects focus on posture, seating, vibration, lifting, exercise, device
    development, and a model program to promote early return to work after
    back injury. The Center publishes self-help materials and provides
    bibliographic and fact-finding services to researchers and health care
    providers. Major funding for the center is provided by a grant from the
    Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center program of the National
    Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, U.S. Department of=20
