OVERVIEW
The second annual meeting of the International Functional Electrical
Stimulation Society (IFESS) is being organized to promote the exchange of
new knowledge and technology in the field of FES.
The focus of the Neural Prostheses: Motor System V Conference is the
integration of engineering and neuroscience research efforts.
The joint conference will take place at Simon Fraser University in
Burnaby, BC, Canada. The Burnaby Mountain campus
overlooks the beautiful city of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Although the conference has a busy schedule, it is being organized in a
flexible way to leave sufficient free time for direct contacts and
discussions among participants. Afternoons will be used for various
activities such as round table discussions, special sessions, video
presentations, and hardware demonstrations.
SCHEDULE
All conference sessions take place in SFU's West Mall Complex. The
mountain-top campus is approximately thirty (30) minutes by car from
downtown Vancouver.
The conference begins on Saturday evening, August 16, with a welcome dinner
reception held in the Lounge on the 3rd floor of the West Mall Complex
followed by an invited lecture from Dr. Albert Aguayo, McGill University,
Canada honouring the pioneering work of Dr. Richard Bunge in promoting
multidisciplinary approaches to studying rehabilitation of humans with
spinal cord injury.
The conference ends at approximately 12 noon on Thursday, August 21.

Canada and Dr Naomi Kleitman, The Miami Project of Cure Paralysis, Miami,

ABSTRACTS
The deadline for receipt of submissions is now past and all authors are
being contacted. For those papers that will need revisions, the corrected
CAMERA-READY copy of the complete manuscript must be sent to-
Dejan Popovic
before Monday, June 16, 1997.
The instructions for preparation of the manuscript are identical to the
rules used for IEEE EMBS conferences, and the length of the contributions
are limited to a maximum of TWO (2) pages. Detailed instructions concerning
the manuscript will be sent to the first author of each of the accepted
abstracts.
STUDENT AWARD
The winner of the student competition will receive a complimentary
conference registration. The winner will be contacted shortly and the name
posted on the web site.

Take advantage of discounts on conference fees for early registration on or
before Monday, JUNE 16. Fees apply to all those attending and/or presenting
at IFESS/NP '97 and are subject to a 7% goods and services tax.

Student Fee
The student fee is offered to graduate students. Students must provide a
copy of their student ID card or submit proof of full time status. Post
doctoral students pay the full registration fee.
Methods of Payment
You can pay by cheque, MasterCard or VISA. Cheques should be made payable
to SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY and accompany the registration form.
SFU does NOT accept American Express.
All credit card transactions will be processed in Canadian dollars and are
subject to current exchange rates.
Registrations will not be processed without fee payment.
Cancellations and Refunds
Full refunds, less a Cdn $70/US $53 processing fee, will be granted to
cancellations received on or before August 1.
People who cancel will be sent a copy of the Conference Proceedings Book.
To be issued a refund, delegates must return their original Simon Fraser
University receipt to SFU Conference Services. Registrations may be
transferred to another individual.
No refunds will be granted after August 1, except in extenuating circumstances.

CONFERENCE MEALS
Campus cafeterias will be open for conference participants to purchase
their own breakfasts and lunches but will close after 2:00 pm.
The dinners on Saturday and Wednesday are included in the registration fee.
Guest dinner tickets for both the Saturday dinner/reception and the
Wednesday dinner cruise (includes bus to and from cruise) are available for

Special dinners have been arranged for participants and their guests on

ON-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION
Preferential bookings for NP/IFESS delegates will be held until Monday,
July 14. Accommodation and reservation inquiries should be directed to the
SFU Accommodation office. Reservations will be accepted after July 14 on a
"space available" basis only. All room rates quoted include 8% hotel tax
and 7% goods and services tax.
McTaggart-Cowan Hall
Limited space is reserved for persons with disabilities only. This is a
traditional style dormitory building with shared washrooms down the hall.
Each individual room is supplied with a single bed, refrigerator, linen,
pillow, towels, soap and will receive daily bed making and towel exchange.

Townhouse Accommodation
Each townhouse unit houses 4 people. These units have several flights of
stairs and are not wheelchair accessible. All rooms are single occupancy,
and each guest receives a key set for their room and front door to the

receive daily bed making and towel exchange.

Checking In

TRAVEL INFORMATION
Travel into Vancouver
Vancouver's International Airport is served by a large number of domestic
and international flights. We suggest that conference participants call
their travel agent immediately and ask them to negotiate the best air fare
for their trip to Vancouver.
How to get to Simon Fraser University from the airport/Vancouver
The taxi fare from the airport to Simon Fraser University is approximately
$40, $30 from downtown Vancouver, and $12 from nearby off-campus hotels.
Travel time to the university from the airport takes about 45 minutes to an
hour. Travel time from Vancouver to the University takes about 30 minutes
by car.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR VISITORS
Currency
US visitors can take advantage of the very attractive exchange rate and
will find that their dollar goes a lot further in Canada. By using Canadian
money or your credit card during your travels in British Columbia, you will
avoid currency exchange problems. U.S. dollars can be exchanged at any bank
or at the International Currency Exchange Service kiosk at Vancouver
International Airport.
Customs/Entry Regulations
>From the United States: American citizens do not require a passport or visa
to enter Canada. However, native-born United States citizens should carry
identity papers (birth or voter's certificate) establishing nationality.
Naturalized citizens should carry documentary evidence of citizenship (e.g.
green card). Permanent alien residents of the United States are advised to
carry immigration documents.
>From Countries other than the United States: A valid passport is required.
Citizens of some countries also need a Visa to enter Canada. If in doubt,
check with the Canadian Embassy or High Commission in your country.
Health Insurance
Canadian government health plans do not cover non-residents visiting
Canada. We suggest that you purchase your own personal health and accident
insurance.
Taxes
Non-Canadian residents can claim a refund of the Goods and Services Tax on
hotel accommodation and on goods taken home. There is no refund for
services (e.g. conference fees, transportation, meals, etc.) used in
Canada. Refunds can be claimed at the Duty Free Stores at land points of
departure. If you are flying out of Canada, you can claim your GST refund
by mailing in a refund form together with your original sales receipts.
Time Zones
Vancouver is located in the Pacific Standard Time Zone. The time in
Vancouver, for example, is the same as the time in San Francisco or
Seattle, and is three hours behind Toronto or New York City.

OVERVIEW
The second annual meeting of the International Functional Electrical
Stimulation Society (IFESS) is being organized to promote the exchange of
new knowledge and technology in the field of FES.
The focus of the Neural Prostheses: Motor System V Conference is the
integration of engineering and neuroscience research efforts.
The joint conference will take place at Simon Fraser University in
Burnaby, BC, Canada. The Burnaby Mountain campus
overlooks the beautiful city of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Although the conference has a busy schedule, it is being organized in a
flexible way to leave sufficient free time for direct contacts and
discussions among participants. Afternoons will be used for various
activities such as round table discussions, special sessions, video
presentations, and hardware demonstrations.
SCHEDULE
All conference sessions take place in SFU's West Mall Complex. The
mountain-top campus is approximately thirty (30) minutes by car from
downtown Vancouver.
The conference begins on Saturday evening, August 16, with a welcome dinner
reception held in the Lounge on the 3rd floor of the West Mall Complex
followed by an invited lecture from Dr. Albert Aguayo, McGill University,
Canada honouring the pioneering work of Dr. Richard Bunge in promoting
multidisciplinary approaches to studying rehabilitation of humans with
spinal cord injury.
The conference ends at approximately 12 noon on Thursday, August 21.

Canada and Dr Naomi Kleitman, The Miami Project of Cure Paralysis, Miami,
Florida, USA.

ABSTRACTS
The deadline for receipt of submissions is now past and all authors are
being contacted. For those papers that will need revisions, the corrected
CAMERA-READY copy of the complete manuscript must be sent to-

before Monday, June 16, 1997.
The instructions for preparation of the manuscript are identical to the
rules used for IEEE EMBS conferences, and the length of the contributions
are limited to a maximum of TWO (2) pages. Detailed instructions concerning
the manuscript will be sent to the first author of each of the accepted
abstracts.
STUDENT AWARD
The winner of the student competition will receive a complimentary
conference registration. The winner will be contacted shortly and the name
posted on the web site.

Take advantage of discounts on conference fees for early registration on or
before Monday, JUNE 16. Fees apply to all those attending and/or presenting
at IFESS/NP '97 and are subject to a 7% goods and services tax.

Student Fee
The student fee is offered to graduate students. Students must provide a
copy of their student ID card or submit proof of full time status. Post
doctoral students pay the full registration fee.
Methods of Payment
You can pay by cheque, MasterCard or VISA. Cheques should be made payable
to SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY and accompany the registration form.
SFU does NOT accept American Express.
All credit card transactions will be processed in Canadian dollars and are
subject to current exchange rates.
Registrations will not be processed without fee payment.
Cancellations and Refunds
Full refunds, less a Cdn $70/US $53 processing fee, will be granted to
cancellations received on or before August 1.
People who cancel will be sent a copy of the Conference Proceedings Book.
To be issued a refund, delegates must return their original Simon Fraser
University receipt to SFU Conference Services. Registrations may be
transferred to another individual.
No refunds will be granted after August 1, except in extenuating circumstances.

CONFERENCE MEALS
Campus cafeterias will be open for conference participants to purchase
their own breakfasts and lunches but will close after 2:00 pm.
The dinners on Saturday and Wednesday are included in the registration fee.
Guest dinner tickets for both the Saturday dinner/reception and the
Wednesday dinner cruise (includes bus to and from cruise) are available for

ON-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION
Preferential bookings for NP/IFESS delegates will be held until Monday,
July 14. Accommodation and reservation inquiries should be directed to the
SFU Accommodation office. Reservations will be accepted after July 14 on a
"space available" basis only. All room rates quoted include 8% hotel tax
and 7% goods and services tax.
McTaggart-Cowan Hall
Limited space is reserved for persons with disabilities only. This is a
traditional style dormitory building with shared washrooms down the hall.
Each individual room is supplied with a single bed, refrigerator, linen,
pillow, towels, soap and will receive daily bed making and towel exchange.

Townhouse Accommodation
Each townhouse unit houses 4 people. These units have several flights of
stairs and are not wheelchair accessible. All rooms are single occupancy,
and each guest receives a key set for their room and front door to the

receive daily bed making and towel exchange.

Checking In
Guests staying on campus should check-in directly with the Accommodation

TRAVEL INFORMATION
Travel into Vancouver
Vancouver's International Airport is served by a large number of domestic
and international flights. We suggest that conference participants call
their travel agent immediately and ask them to negotiate the best air fare
for their trip to Vancouver.
How to get to Simon Fraser University from the airport/Vancouver
The taxi fare from the airport to Simon Fraser University is approximately
$40, $30 from downtown Vancouver, and $12 from nearby off-campus hotels.
Travel time to the university from the airport takes about 45 minutes to an
hour. Travel time from Vancouver to the University takes about 30 minutes
by car.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR VISITORS
Currency
US visitors can take advantage of the very attractive exchange rate and
will find that their dollar goes a lot further in Canada. By using Canadian
money or your credit card during your travels in British Columbia, you will
avoid currency exchange problems. U.S. dollars can be exchanged at any bank
or at the International Currency Exchange Service kiosk at Vancouver
International Airport.
Customs/Entry Regulations
>From the United States: American citizens do not require a passport or visa
to enter Canada. However, native-born United States citizens should carry
identity papers (birth or voter's certificate) establishing nationality.
Naturalized citizens should carry documentary evidence of citizenship (e.g.
green card). Permanent alien residents of the United States are advised to
carry immigration documents.
>From Countries other than the United States: A valid passport is required.
Citizens of some countries also need a Visa to enter Canada. If in doubt,
check with the Canadian Embassy or High Commission in your country.
Health Insurance
Canadian government health plans do not cover non-residents visiting
Canada. We suggest that you purchase your own personal health and accident
insurance.
Taxes
Non-Canadian residents can claim a refund of the Goods and Services Tax on
hotel accommodation and on goods taken home. There is no refund for
services (e.g. conference fees, transportation, meals, etc.) used in
Canada. Refunds can be claimed at the Duty Free Stores at land points of
departure. If you are flying out of Canada, you can claim your GST refund
by mailing in a refund form together with your original sales receipts.
Time Zones
Vancouver is located in the Pacific Standard Time Zone. The time in
Vancouver, for example, is the same as the time in San Francisco or
Seattle, and is three hours behind Toronto or New York City.
