    Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship Opportunity for a Physical Therapist
    The Pennsylvania State University
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Center for Locomotion Studies at The Pennsylvania State University
    (CELOS) invites applications for a graduate assistantship to support
    doctoral study in the field of Kinesiology beginning in the Fall of 1997.
    CELOS is an interdisciplinary research center in the College of Health and
    Human Development operated under the direction of Dr. Peter Cavanagh.
    Applications are encouraged from individuals holding an MS degree in
    Physical Therapy with an undergraduate degree in any related Science or
    Engineering discipline. Strong motivation, solid previous academic
    performance, good GRE's, related research experience, and the desire to
    work with an interdisciplinary team in a quantitative setting are all
    essential qualifications. The assistantship will pay a stipend and provide
    full tuition support. Dissertation projects are expected to be developed
    in conjunction with one of several ongoing CELOS studies involving the
    biomechanics and motor control of posture and lower extremity movement.
    Current research projects include studies of: 1) Stair descent by the
    elderly (supported by the National Institute on Aging [NIA]), 2) Exercise
    countermeasures for bone loss during space flight (supported by NASA), and
    3) Foot structure and the role of somatosensory input in motor control
    among neuropathic diabetic patients (supported by the American Diabetes
    Association and NIA). Penn State also has strong clinical ties and
    supports two Diabetes Foot Clinics. These facilities provide a setting for
    more clinically oriented investigations.
    To request an application and/or additional information on this
    opportunity, contact Dr. Lorraine Mulfinger, 29 Recreation Building, Penn
    State University, University Park, PA 16802; phone: 814-865-1972; email:
    lxm14@psu.edu.
    CELOS reserves the right to reject any or all applicants. Penn State is an
    affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. Women and minorities are
    encouraged to apply.
