    PhD PROJECT - STUDENT WANTED.

    ANALYSIS OF BONE ADAPTATION FOLLOWING JOINT REPLACEMENT.


    This proposed project is intended to continue an existing project, that is
    predicting changes in the proximal femur after hip replacement with a
    cement-free fixation. We are running a prospective CT and DEXA study, that
    allows us to model geometry and density of the femur, in conjunction with a
    local hospital. This is used in computer modelling and finite element based
    stress analysis. Bone remodelling predictions are based on changes in strain
    energy density. We are already predicting the basic pattern of bone changes
    correctly, but wish to make the system more accurate. We also wish to
    examine a range of implant designs, to find out how widely applicable this
    method may be. It can then be used for prospective implant evaluation.

    At present, UK government funding is available for a 3 year PhD programme,
    with an October 1997 start date. This funding requires a UK national with at
    least a good BSc/BEng honours degree in mechanical engineering (or similar
    subject), or a Masters degree.

    Other people are encouraged to apply, as grant applications may be tailored
    to their situation.

    This project will be based at the Biomechanics Section, Mechanical
    Engineering Department, Imperial College, London SW7 2BX, England. Imperial
    College is part of London University, and is situated in central West London.
