Dear Listers
Below is a short abstract of a thesis successfully defended here at the
biomechanics laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden that may be of interest for this
group. The Thesis is entitled:
A FORCE MEASURING HORSE SHOE APPLIED IN KINETIC AND KINEMATIC ANALYSIS OF
THE TROTTING HORSE
By Lars Roepstorff DVM, PhD
The purpose of the study was to develop and test a force measuring horseshoe
(FMS) for kinetic analysis and implement it together with kinematic analysis
in the trotting horse. The FMS is light enough to be used in fast moving
horses and measures both vertical and horizontal forces. Aunique
combination of kinetic and kinematic analysis has enabled basic study of
speed dependency. The simultaneous recordings with the FMS and high speed
cinematography also allowed for a general description of the forelimb and
hind limb function the the trotting horse. Studies on the influence on
treadmill construction and the influence of application of a horizontal
pulling load on kinetic and kinematic variables have laid the ground for
continued investigation on relationships between treadmills and overground
locomotion.
Future studies involving the FMS can encompass functional anatomy, track
testing, an aid to lameness diagnostics and effects of therapeutic modalities.
