Switzer Fellowships Available
The U.S. Department of Education announces the availability of research
fellowships in the fields of disability and rehabilitation. The fellowships to
be administered by the Department's National Institute on Disability and
Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), are on two levels:
Distinguished Fellowships are awarded to individuals of doctoral or comparable
status who have seven or more years' experience in relevant research areas.
($55,000)
Merit Fellowships are for persons with advanced training or experience in
independent study in appropriate areas, but who are in earlier stages of their
research careers, or who do not have a doctorate. ($45,000)
Successful applicants will conduct research on topics of their choosing such as:
the effects of disabling conditions on the lives of persons with disabilities,
ways to improve the delivery of rehabilitative services, or difficulties
encountered in conducting this kind of research. The fellowships cover a
12-month period and provide a stipend and allowance for research-related
expenses. Awards are made to individuals only, not institutions. These
fellowships require a full-time commitment from the applicants.
Applicants will be evaluated on the quality and level of their formal education,
pertinent experience and the recommendations of present or former supervisors or
colleagues. Of particular interest are comments regarding the applicant's
ability to work creatively in scientific research. The application, which must
not exceed 12 pages (this does not include references, vitae or letters of
support), must address:
o the importance of the research target to the mission of NIDRR;
o the research hypothesis, objectives and methodology;
o assurance of the availability of necessary data resources, equipment and
institutional support.
The fellowship program was announced in the Federal Register on June 19 1997.
The deadline for applications is August 29, 1997.
