JOB OPPORTUNITY: POST-DOC IN MOTOR CONTROL

    GENERAL
A central theme of the research conducted at the Faculty of Human
Movement Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is the
coordination of human movement. This theme is approached from
different perspectives, among others Biomechanics and Nonlinear
Dynamics. The research of the faculty is organized in the Institute
for Fundamental and Clinical Human Movement Sciences. A number of
research groups from the Catholic University of Nijmegen also
participate in this institute. On the basis of a university grant,
post-doc projects are initiated aimed at intensifying the relation
between the partners in the research institute. At this point in
time, a research project is being started that is part of ongoing
research into the coordination of fast interceptive actions.

    TASK
The researcher to be appointed will be dealing with the coordination
of fast interceptive actions (kicking a soccer ball) in healthy
subjects and subjects suffering from Parkinson's disease. The
questions are in what way visual information on the approaching ball
is transformed into adequate control of the activation of muscle
groups of the lower extremities, in what way the behavior of
Parkinson patients deviates from normal, and to what aspect of the
visuo-motor transformation the behavioral abnormalities can be
ascribed. Finally it is intended to investigate to what extent the
behavioral abnormalities can be understood on the basis of existing
models pertaining to this visuo-motor transformation. In order to
address these questions, experiments will be performed using both
healthy subjects and subjects suffering from Parkinson's disease.

    PROFILE
We are looking for a post-doc graduated in biophysics or
neuroscience, with a strong interest in motor control.

    SPECIFICS
This is a two-year full-time project. For the majority of the time
the researcher will be based in Amsterdam. Salary is set in
concordance with regulations for scientific personnel.

    FURTHER INFORMATION
For information on the university, check the homepage of the Vrije
Universiteit: http://www.vu.nl. For further information on the
project contact Dr. M.F. (Maarten) Bobbert (email
m_f_bobbert@fbw.vu.nl). Those interested should send a letter of
application, curriculum vitae, publication record and 2 letters of
recommendation to Dr. A.J. van Soest, Faculty of Human Movement
Sciences, Vrije Universiteit, van der Boechorststraat 9, NL 1081 BT
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands. Applications should be in our office by
    september 15th.
