FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

FIFTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THE 3-D ANALYSIS OF HUMAN MOVEMENT

July 2-5, 1998, Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

OFFICIAL EVENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF BIOMECHANICS

    INTRODUCTION
The International Symposium on the 3-D Analysis of Human Movement is
a scientific and technical forum for investigators of human motion,
whether their work is applied to the study of musculoskeletal disability
or disease, sport and elite performance, or basic studies of
biomechanics. By generating communication and contact between
scientific disciplines and specialties, the Symposium will be directed
at sharing information and results relating to philosophies for solving
    problems of measurement and analysis.

    SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
The conference spans three days, and includes four keynote
presentations, forty fifteen-minute oral scientific presentations, and a
number of technical presentations from industry.

    KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
    Jim COLLINS, Boston University, USA
    Dynamic Modeling
    Pascal FUA, EPF Lausanne, SWITZERLAND
    Animation
Jean HELD, University of Vermont, USA
    Motor function
Jim RICHARDS, University of Delaware, USA
    Instrumentation

    THEMES
DATA CAPTURE: New instrumentation, hardware, accuracy and precision
of reconstruction techniques, interpolations and calibration, lens
    distortion correction.
JOINT MOTION: Location of markers, relation between markers and
    joint motion, defining coordinate systems.
MODELING: 3-D kinematic and kinetic/dynamic joint models, finite
element techniques, estimation of internal forces, model validation and
    sensitivity analysis.
3-D REPRESENTATION: Computer graphics, animation, simulation,
virtual reality applied to human movement.
3-D APPLICATIONS AND INTERPRETATION: 3-D variables and their
    relationship to conventional 2-D parameters.

    HOST INSTITUTION
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

    SPONSORS
The Symposium is grateful to the following firms, who have agreed to
    provide major sponsorship:
    Motion Analysis Corporation
    VICON Motion Systems

    INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS
The four-page manuscript is a complete mini-paper with figures and
references, and will be published in the Proceedings. Each submission
is to represent original work that has not been reported elsewhere. The
paper may report significant results of current pilot studies which may
lead to a subsequent journal publications, and as such we do not claim
    any copyright privileges.
All papers are to be up to FOUR 8 1/2 x 11 inch or A4 pages in
length. The characters should be 10 point Times type or equivalent (12
characters to the inch), and single spaced. The title of the paper in
capital letters is centred on the first page about 20 mm from the top.
Leave one line space, and centre the names of the author and co-authors,
affiliations, and addresses below the title.
Start the text 70mm from the top of the first page and 25 mm from
the top of subsequent pages. Indent each paragraph 4 spaces. The text
is to be in two columns each 80 mm wide, separated by a 15 mm space,
with equal margins on both sides, justified to the maximum column
width. Text should finish 250 mm from the top of the page. Headings
should be in capitals, left justified and underlined, and preceded by a
single blank line. Second-level headings should be in upper and lower
case bold type, indented 4 spaces from the left margin. Figures may be
full width if necessary. An illustration of the layout will be found on
the website (address below). Use SI units - papers based on Imperial
units will be rejected. The manuscript will be reproduced exactly as
submitted, so use a new black ribbon or laser printing.
Send the ORIGINAL AND THREE COPIES of the manuscript to Dr. Carolyn
    F. Small, Scientific Committee Chair (address below). The submission
must be postmarked before January 30, 1998.

    PUBLICATION
All keynote speeches, and abstracts accepted for presentation, will
be published in the Symposium proceedings. Selected papers from the
past two meetings were published in special issues of "Human Movement
Science," and it is hoped to do the same for this meeting.

    DEADLINES
    Abstract submission: January 30, 1998
Notification to authors: April 1, 1998
Early bird registration: May 18, 1998

    TECHNICAL PROGRAM
