We are presently setting up a "homemade" forceplate system using PVDF
piezoelectric film hooked up to a storage oscilloscope. This seems to
work well and it (the PVDF) is cheap. I have seen some published
biomechanics research done with a similar system and have not had any
problems with it myself. I suppose that there would be some limitations
depending on what kind of data you were collecting and what data
reduction requirements you had (and whether or not you have a storage
oscilloscope on hand).
