  • Announcement for Upcoming Position

    DEPARTMENT OF BIOENGINEERING AND NEUROSCIENCE,

L.C. SMITH COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE,

    SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY.

    ANNOUNCEMENT.

We expect to advertise the following position in the next
few weeks. The advertisement will appear here and in the
appropriate print media. Persons interested in the
possibilities of this position should contact Dr. Karen
Hiiemae (karen_hiiemae@isr.syr.edu) by e-mail for further
information. Expressions of likely interest will be very
    welcome.

The Department of Bioengineering and Neuroscience expects to
inaugurate (Fall 1998) an M.S. Program in Bioengineering. We
have been awarded a WHITAKER FOUNDATION SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY
AWARD in furtherance of this effort.

We will seek to recruit an engineer/biomechanist (at the
Associate or Assistant Professor level), with a primary
interest in the biomechanics of the skeletomuscular system,
broadly understood. The appointee will be expected to have
(AP), or build (aP) a strong research program as well as
contribute to the development of the graduate program and
the enhancement of the current undergraduate biomechanics
track. The Department has a Biomechanics Teaching
Laboratory/Classroom equipped with the support of a maximal
NSF ILI Award. We have strong relationships with the State
University of New York Health Sciences Center in Syracuse
(SUNY Upstate). Faculty from the Orthopedic Research
Laboratory (ORL, Dept. of Orthopedic Surgery) are intimately
involved in the current undergraduate Program and will
participate in the biomechanical aspects of the M.S.
Program. Details of BEN-NEU and ORL current research
programs are included in the materials on the web sites
    listed below.

Syracuse University has defined its mission as being a
student-centered research university. The Department has a
long history of developing students as scholars and
researchers. Our students are regularly awarded Goldwater
Scholarships; many spend summers in faculty laboratories
participating in ongoing externally funded research
    programs. Highly interactive relationships with
undergraduates are a hallmark of our educational philosophy.
We expect the best of our students to graduate with
published abstracts and sometimes full papers in
    professional journals.

The Department has a long-standing, and highly successful,
B.S. Program in Bioengineering. Until now the graduate
programs (Ph.D. and M.S.) have been in Neuroscience. We
consider this new, Whitaker Foundation supported, initiative
important and intend it not only to provide M.S. graduates
with a broadly-based preparation for professional careers in
biomedical engineering but also to prepare them for further
graduate study. We plan to build on the M.S. and within a
few years inaugurate a doctoral program.

We wish to make an appointment effective July 1 1998 or as
    soon as possible thereafter.

Syracuse University is an equal opportunity employer and
welcomes applications from women and minorities.
