    ************************************************** *******************
THE 1ST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
    IN CLIMBING AND MOUNTAINEERING.
    7TH - 9TH APRIL 1999,
    UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS, UK.
    ************************************************** *******************
First announcement and call for papers

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE. This conference is being organised by the Centre
for Studies in Physical Education and Sport Science at the University
of Leeds, with the backing of the BRITISH MOUNTAINEERING COUNCIIL.

Coming at the end of a decade of rapid and continued development in
the sports of climbing and mountaineering, the conference will have
    three broad themes; the historical perspective; current innovations;
and developments for the 21st century.

PROPOSED TOPICS: Papers and posters are invited on all aspects of
science and technology applied to the study and performance of
climbing and mountaineering, including; textiles, equipment design,
biomechanics, sports injury, physiology, environmental factors,
climbing wall design, climbing safety and coaching/training science?

FORMAT: The conference will take place over 3 days with a number of
keynotes from invited international speakers and with scientific
presentations in both plenary and parallel sessions. Time will be
given to the presentation of posters and for the development of
    informal discussion groups.

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS: In the first instance, selection will be based
on the submission of single page abstract for both conference
presentations and posters. Submission will be required in electronic
format and e-mail submissions are particularly encouraged. Further
details may be obtained by one of the means described below. It is
anticipated that the full proceedings of the conference will be
published in book form and all presenters will be asked to supply more
detailed submissions closer to the conference date.

THE VENUE: The University of Leeds has a notable reputation in this
field and in a series of innovations are; the first courses for
training outdoor activity instructors/teachers in 1949 (this has
continued to the present day with a unique BSc degree in Sports
Science (Outdoor Activities) whose first cohort will graduate in
1999); the first purpose built indoor climbing wall and the
development of UIAA standards for climbing helmets. Current research
and consultancy projects include work on the performance of waterproof
clothing, the development of climbing equipment and the biomechanical
analysis of climbing technique. Leeds, itself, is conveniently located
close to the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District National Parks with
some of the most spectacular climbing sites in the UK.
