The Motion Analysis Laboratory of Shriners Hospitals for Children
Northern California has a full-time opening for a Ph.D. level
engineer, to begin in March of 1998. This established gait
laboratory provides measurement and analysis services in support of
patient care and has great potential for clinical research, both
locally and in cooperation with motion analysis laboratories in nine
other Shriners Hospitals. Walking problems are the main focus of
attention, with additional interest in sitting stability, detailed
hand and foot movements, wheelchair propulsion and physical
activities for recreation.
Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California is the newest,
largest and most diversified of the twenty-one hospitals and burns
institutes that comprise the Shriners Hospitals for Children system.
The Hospital, located in Sacramento adjacent to the University of
California at Davis Medical Center, provides free care to patients
with orthopaedic disabilities, spinal cord injuries and burns.
This position provides an exceptional career opportunity for an
innovative, team-oriented individual experienced in both the
technical and patient-centered aspects of biomechanical measurement
and analysis. The successful candidate will provide scientific
leadership and hands-on technical support for the clinical operation
of the Motion Analysis Laboratory as part of a multidisciplinary
team that includes an orthopaedist, a kinesiologist, a physical
therapist and a laboratory services manager.
Applicants should have a doctoral degree in biomechanics,
engineering, or other field related to musculoskeletal research,
along with a record of success in obtaining and managing grants in
support of clinically oriented research. Opportunities for academic
affiliation exist at the University of California campus in Davis
(about eighteen miles away), at the University of California Davis
Medical Center (right across the street), and at California State
University, Sacramento (about three miles away).
