    CALL FOR PAPERS

The Bioengineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers will be pleased to receive original abstracts in all areas of
bioengineering for publication and presentation at the 1998
International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition - ASME
Winter Annual Meeting. The Highlight Topic for the meeting is "Global
Technologies for the Competitive Edge". Submissions of abstracts in
this or any area of bioengineering are encouraged. The Bioengineering
Division will be organizing special sessions, several of which are
    described below.

    SOLID MECHANICS

    Impact biomechanics, joint mechanics; joint replacement; joint wear;
bone mechanics; finite deformation of soft tissue; computer aided
    surgical planning and general topics.

    FLUID MECHANICS

Cardiac valves; cardiac catheters; vessel wall and fluid mechanics; MEMS
    and microfluidmechanics; pulmonary and respiratory fluid mechanics;
optimization of computational fluid mechanics; cellular and tissue
engineering; flow visualization and virtual reality; and general
    biofluid mechanics.

    HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

Biothermal safety issues in consumer and industrial applications; laser
induced transport in diagnostic and therapeutic applications; ice
physics in biological systems; thermal, electrical and physically
induced alterations in cells and tissue; modeling of heat and mass
transfer in bio-systems; heat and mass transfer in whole organs; and
novel instrumentation in biomedical applications; and bioheat and mass
    transfer in microgravity.

    DESIGN/REHABILITATION

Seating design with emphasis on spine & vibration; MEMS; prosthetics &
orthotics; joint mechanics; joint replacement & wear; cost issues in
design of orthopedic implants; and gait and control.

    BIOMATERIALS

Mechanics and biology of wear debris formation; mechanics of remodeling
of tissue; cardiovascular biomaterials; orthopedic biomaterials.

    ABSTRACT FORMAT

Abstracts are not to exceed to exceed two (2) pages (1 page of text and
1 page of tables and figures are recommended), and are to be prepared
and submitted following instructions in the abstract preparation
    instruction kit.

    STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION

The Bioengineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers announces its Tenth Annual Student Paper Competition to be
held at the 1998 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and
Exposition - ASME Winter Annual Meeting, Anaheim, California; November
    15-20, 1998.

    ELIGIBILITY

Papers will be accepted from both undergraduate and graduate students.
Awards will be made at the Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral levels.
Graduate students competing must not have completed the defense of their
dissertation prior to submission of the abstract. Competition papers
are not to be simultaneously submitted in response to the general Call
for Papers. Student competitions papers that are accepted for
presentation in the student competition may be considered for
presentation at the regular scientific sessions.

    PAPER TOPICS

Wide latitude is allowed in the topic of the students paper. Examples
of acceptable papers include, but are not limited to: the design or
evaluation of a medical device, the development of new instrumentation
for conducting experiments or making physiological measurements,
experimental research, and mathematical models. Survey papers will not
    be considered.

    HOW TO SUBMIT A PAPER

To submit a paper for competition you should prepare an abstract
following the instructions for the submission of papers to the regular
scientific sessions, and fill out an application form for the student
paper competition which is included with the abstract preparation
    instructions kit.

    NOTIFICATION

You will be notified in writing if your paper has been accepted for
presentation at the student paper competition. The competition will be
held during the first or second day of the Bioengineering Division
scientific program, and the awards will b presented at the
    Bioengineering Division Banquet.

    JUDGING

Selection of the best student papers will be made following the oral
presentation. The judges will select the winning papers based upon the
content of the work performed, the organization and clarity of the
presentation, and the ability to answer questions about the work.
Judging will be performed by senior investigators selected by the Honors
    Committee of the Bioengineering Division.

    ABSTRACT FORMAT

Abstracts are not to exceed two (2) pages (1 page of text and 1 page of
tables and figures are recommended), and are able to be prepared and
submitted following instructions in the abstract preparation instruction
    kit.
