Dear All,
Thank you very much to everyone who responded to my query about instantaneous
metabolic energy cost. It's been very helpful - and it looks like an area
where work is still "in progress".
I've included all the replies I've received so far. (And check out the

Thanks again

Nice to see a query from someone who clearly has done some prior legwork!
Biomch-l often seems to degenerate into a series of homework queries from
lazy students . . . Your question is not exactly up my alley, but you
might like to have a look at the model of heart muscle function devised
by N. Westerhof a few years back, published if I remember in Cardiovascular
Research (I can find more exact reference details if Medline doesn't turn
up what you need -- this much is from memory while at the terminal). The
muscle was modelled as a time-varying compliance, and the performance
compared very nicely with perfused cat heart data, including the way the
efficiency of metabolic energy to mechanical work varied with position on
the pump function curve of outflow-rate vs. developed pressure.

ABSTRACT
Kyröläinen, Heikki
Neuromuscular function among power- and endurance-trained athletes.
ISBN 951-34-0507-9
75,- mk (82 p.).
Diss.
Available only in English.
The present study was planned to demonstrate possible differences in
neuromuscular function and
mechanical efficiency (ME) between power- and endurance-trained athletes during
natural locomotion.
Reflex and voluntary functions were studied in isolated conditions and in the
maximal and submaximal
stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercises (jumping and running). In the reflex
conditions, the endurance
group was more responsive to mechanical stimuli because of obvious dominance of
the slow twitch
fibers. In the maximal voluntary conditions for knee extensors and
plantarflexors, the power athletes
produced higher forces with higher rates of force production. However, the
respective EMG- time curve
did not differ between the subject groups suggesting that the observed
differences are primarily of
structural origin. In the maximal jumping exercises, the power athletes were
also able to produce high
preactivation of leg extensor muscles and successive high and smooth eccentric
activity. Additionally in
the concentric phase of the take-off, they showed rapid EMG recovery. In the
submaximal jumping and
running, ME was quite similar in all conditions among both subject groups. This
might be due to the
endurance athletes having more developed oxidative metabolic functions, whereas
the power group
demon strated better neuromuscular function. In other words, higher ME could
physiologically be
achieved by improved economy of the performance or by the better utilization of
elasticity. It is therefore
suggested that the training background and/or the inherited structures cause
differences between the
athletic groups in neuromuscular function and in muscle metabolism. However, in
many cases these
differences were more individual and, therefore, there appeared no influence on
ME in group analysis.
Key words: stretch-shortening cycle, mechanical efficiency, stretch reflex,
electromyography, muscle
strength, jumping, running

Bill,
Many PhD students have had the same aspirations. You would achieve
something if you manage!
There are decent pictures of the chemical processes, but thre are problems
concerning mainly two things: The chemical dynamics and the system aspect.
The problems could possibly be addressed theretically, but particularly the
chemical dynamics area is farly uncharted. If you would go into it from the
experimental side I suggest you develop a method to study calcium turnover
with a high time resolution.

See the very last page of R.McN Alexander's book "'Exploring
Biomechanics"' (Scientific American Press). I have it not at hand,
but the chapter is titled like:"Things we still do not know."'
Another reference is to a special issue of the Journal of Applied
Biomechanics: 13, around p 400., with a target article of Van Ingen
Schenau and a lot of responses, also from muscle physiologists. You
will not find your answer there either.
There is still a lot of good work to do!

Bill,
Many PhD students have had the same aspirations.
